BALTIMORE (AP) Cardinal William Keeler will not attend a Jesuit university commencement because keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, a Catholic, supports abortion rights, an official said Wednesday.
Giuliani, the Republican former New York City mayor mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, is expected to award some 1,600 degrees and certificates at Friday's commencement at Loyola College of Maryland.
He also is to receive an honorary degree.
Friday's graduating class entered the school one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said Loyola spokesman Mark Kelly.
"The attacks had a huge effect on this class, many of whom are from New York," Kelly said late Wednesday. "The college selected Mayor Giuliani because of his courage and leadership after the attacks."
Kelly added Loyola does not agree with every position held by every speaker.
Keeler could not be reached for comment Wednesday night. His spokesman did not elaborate on the decision, but confirmed it was because of Giuliani's abortion stance.
The Cardinal Newman Society is planning protests, the group said in a statement.
The society is protesting speakers and honorees at 18 Catholic college and universities, saying the invitations violate the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops statement last year asserting "Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."
Earlier this week, New York Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, also a Catholic, canceled his speech to graduates of St. Elizabeth's College of Nursing after learning a bishop opposed his appearance. Boehlert said he did not want to draw attention from the graduation ceremony.
A spokeswoman for Giuliani did not immediately return phone calls.
Giuliani is part of the political support system that keeps the suction machines and meatgrinders operating. He claims to be Catholic while supporting the slicing, dicing and hamburgerization of preborn babies by the millions. We do blame the women but they are the only ones with mitigating factors. We REALLY blame the profiteers of Planned Barrenhood, NARAL and, of course, the abortion mill operators and "doctors" above all. They are on a par with former SCOTUS functionary Herod Blackmun.
I am not Catholic but I agree with you. I am furious with Rudy, Geraldine Ferraro, Nancy Pelosi, that whole crew that is owned by NARAL. That Ferraro calls herself a "practicing" Catholic is truely disgraceful. She publicly defends abortion on demand. the other one they should kick out is Mario Cuomo, who was pro life in another life. Look how frightened these Demos are of NARAL. Better they should fear Hashem (G-d).
Stay away from Gomorrah.
I know, I know.....the cancer thing, but look at Arlin Specter, Tony Snow and alot of others who got treatment and went on with life.
AND Ted Kennedy and Francois Kerry and Patrick Leahy and Jack Reid and Christopher Dodd and Susan Collins and barbara Mikulski and Patty Murray and Tom Daschle and Mary Landrieu and Kenneth Salazar and Richard "Eddie Haskell" Durbin and my former Congresscritter from Connecticut: Rosa DeLauro, and Bob Menendez and the entire "Catholic caucus" of the homicidal wings of both parties.
Obviously, your fight is with the college since they're the ones inviting him to speak. Maybe you ought to tell them what Catholics who are actually Catholic shouldn't do, that includes arrogance for instance, which is a sin by Catholic standards.
And, I don't mean the arrogance that comes from holding to our own beliefs as true, but in the intense effort to make others do the same.
"For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake." -- II Corinthians 4:5
I think you have an idea for another deck of cards! I nominate Rosa DeLauro for the Queen of Spades!
