Latest flap shows just how seriously we take ourselves
St Louis Post ^ | May 18, 2005 | Bill McClellan

WHEN IT COMES to discussing ethics in journalism, I like to quote Jimmy Breslin. He wrote about the newspaper world as it was in its heyday: "Anybody on the staff who performed an act without malice was regarded as a dreadful amateur. There was great confusion in the office, for sometimes the sins being committed at typewriters were greater than the ones being written about. . . . Yet the working conditions were the best in the history of the business, for nobody died at an early age of that worst of maladies, seriousness."

snip. Before I comment on Scott's remarks, let me acknowledge that there is some bad blood between the McClellans in Texas and the Missouri clan. Scott's father, Barr McClellan, wrote the book, "Blood, Money and Power: How LBJ Killed JFK." The Missouri branch of the family applauds anybody who can make money off such stuff, but we do not believe in conspiracy theories unless they involve the Chicago Cubs. We think the Texas McClellans are silly.

Snip. But let's get back to Newsweek and ethics. There are at least two ways to look at the Quran story. There is my way, and that is this: Even if the story were true, so what? We are dealing with fanatics who will fly airplanes into buildings and would gladly deliver a nuclear bomb into one of our cities and sit on that bomb as it detonates. These are men who really believe that if they die while waging war against us they will ascend to paradise. Good food, virgins, the whole deal. This is the message they get from the Quran. We're supposed to treat it with reverence? Anything we can do to get those guys to talk is fine with me.

Bill claims to be liberal, but he hates lawyers more than anyone else I read.

"You gotta love Bill"

And you've got to be kidding.

He says "the government denied it, sort of." Nowhere does he mention that Newsweek has admitted that its "high placed anonymous source" now says he is not even sure it happened. While Newsweek is making non-retraction retractions and fanatically looking for a fig leaf, Bill McClellan ignores all this and spends most of his column engaging in a classic "everybody does it" liberal cop-out.

The next time he needs a lawyer, we'll see how much he hates them. If I had to make a wild guess, I'd say McClellan voted for a lawyer for President in '92 and '96.

We're supposed to treat it with reverence?

It's not about sucking up to Moslems. It's about making life as easy as possible for those risking their necks for us. Maybe McClellan ought to get off his tail, fly to Afghanistan & ask our guys over there what they think of the Newsweek article.
