New information about the fallout from a March 2000 Washington Post article in which Katie O'Malley, the wife of Baltimore's mayor, brought up the topic of rumors that her husband had been "running around for years."
The Washington Post was published on a Friday. The following Monday, Katie OMalleys brother, J Joseph Curran III, better known as "Max" Curran wrote an email from his state computer at the Maryland Public Service, where he serves as a commissioner. The email was addressed to the mayors close friend, and deputy mayor, Michael Enright, at Enrights city hall email address.
In that email, Curran wrote "I think we need to get the First Lady a press secretary. Whats this business about telling reporters that Martin is running around. Part of the Deputies' jobs should be getting Martin home with the kids -- I fear the worst.
Three hours later, Curran wrote a second email to Enright. It said you have a loose cannon (i.e. Katie) who needs some help with both Martins absentee-ism, and the presses cut throat inclination."
WBAL obtained the emails through a public information request. Max Curran issued a written statement about those two emails saying he was reacting to the Washington Post article it which it seem to him that the hectic schedules of the mayor and his wife were wearing them thin and they needed more help from City Hall staff. Curran also says "the strength of their devotion to and love for one another is and always has been beyond question.
In other emails, Curran wrote about everything from talk radio, to tickets to Orioles games, to how the comments about the Ed Norris were being reported. In one email, he wrote to Enright, "Hey pal, why don't you call your friends at the Sun and ask why? Surely they will tell you. They'll do it for Mister Martin. So help me Hanna they will. Gee Whiz, in all fairness, I have a better idea, why don't you just oreder them to run the quote. They're your friends; they're for you."
Thanks.
