TBILISI, Georgia (AP) -- The FBI said Wednesday that a grenade thrown in the crowd during last week's speech by President Bush in the Georgian capital was capable of exploding and was considered a threat against the president. The statement by agent Bryan Paarmann contradicted initial reports by Georgian officials that the grenade was not capable of exploding and had been found on the ground. The grenade, wrapped in a dark handkerchief, fell about 100 feet from the podium where Bush was speaking May 10 and "simply failed to function," he said. "We consider this act to be a threat against the health and welfare of the president of the United States as well as the welfare of the multitudes of Georgian people who turned up for this event," Paarmann said. Bush spoke to tens of thousands of people in Freedom Square, a main plaza in Tbilisi. He offered strong support for Georgia's democratic development following the 2003 Rose Revolution. The crowd response was overwhelmingly favorable. I tend to agree with Ray.this could well have been a diverison..
It's unbelievable that this isn't front page news on every newspaper in America.
If this happened to a prominent liberal, they'd be blaming it on "hate speech".
President Bush has been the target of more hate speech than any human being alive.
Well .. "luck" has nothing to do with it.
Our President is protected by those of us who know how to pray over him for protection.
"Thank God for Duds..."
I don't typically thank God for Democrats... ;-)
in all seriousness, Thank you God for protecting our President.
We're also forgetting here the grenade reportedly hit someone in the crowd. It most likely was intended to reach the president but just didn't make it. He certainly could have been killed that day.
Prayers MUST continue. His life is in danger 24/7 because of his strong stand against evil.
Post-Dispatch Washington Bureau 05/18/2005
WASHINGTON - Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who recently visited Iraq as part of a congressional delegation, says that upon returning to the United States he learned that his son had just escaped serious injury in Iraq.
While in Iraq, Akin, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, met briefly with his son, 2nd Lt. Perry Akin, 24, a combat engineer serving in Iraq with the Marines. It was the first visit by a congressional delegation since the new government was announced last month.
A few days later, after arriving back home early last week, Akin got a call from his son's wife.
"He had gone out to build a guard outpost with his combat engineers and the insurgents had targeted that area and started dropping mortar rounds on him and his colleagues," Akin said. "Some of them were wounded. Then one fell 10 feet from Perry. If it had gone off it would have killed him, but it was a dud. So that was a little bit of a catch-your-breath for me and his wife and his mother."
"Live" grenades have their pins pulled....
this one bounced off some poor schmucks head (ouch)
then failed to detonate?
Means it was a dud....or was not a live grenade...
Regardless with all those frag absorbing bodies around
who was really in danger?
Some risky places aren't worth a US presidential visit
imo
My thoughts exactly....he had his protection from above.
Don't think luck had much to do with it. Thank the Lord he is safe.
Okay. It's lucky the Lord kept him safe.
In a freak case a wound could be life threatening. But it's going to be pretty rare to almost non-existant that a grenade exploding 100 feet away is going to cause a person any real damage.
If it had gone off it would have been a huge story even if Bush was completely unharmed.
That is just too close for comfort.
God was watching over the President and the crowd.
Guess he is a republican.
"... it's lucky the Lord kept him safe"
Well .. in my Bible it says, "The Lord watches over HIS Word to PERFORM IT." [my accents]
Which means .. when I say, "No weapon formed against you [President Bush] can prosper". I'm not just talking to see if my mouth will move .. I'm giving the Lord HIS words to perform.
And .. since there are so many of us here at FR who pray for the President everyday - our prayers have much effect, "dynamic in their working".
