It's even worse for observers who don't have a handle on what is going down. There is a big payoff in this one. It is being well played. I too wish it had been played earlier, but it wasn't.

Explain

People who observe a process, but don't understand the process, can be unnecessarily unnerved by what is going on. They sometimes become impatient at inappropriate times. E.g., go to the doctor with a gut pain, and object because you haven't been cut open yet (when you assume you have cancer or appendecitis, but really have the flu).

In the case of confirming judicial nominees, there is much to be gained by breaking the tactic of stomewalling nominees on a Senate-erected supermajority rule. The payoff accrues to the people, as the government more closely adheres to the Constitution.

I think Frist and the GOP are approaching the breaking of the DEM tactic in a thoughtful and wise way.

I wish Frist and the GOP had broken the DEM tactic before now. I'm as impatient as anybody. But I can't always get what I want, so I live with it.

If they want the Republican nomination you have to be a conservative not a weak moderate

I had almost this same discussion with a Graham staffer in January; I told him flat out that they need to understand that MOST of us are what you would call "Bush Republicans" and that stabbing Bush in the back was NOT going to win them any popularity votes because we all felt like we had been robbed in 2000 of a "real" 4 year term for Bush and, now that he won so big in 2004, we DEMANDED that they support him for four years so he can get his agenda through.

Honest to goodness, they just do NOT get it; I told this same person that there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that could EVER make me vote for McCain under any circumstance and I swear to you, they were FLOORED that I wouldn't support him if he was the nominee.

My position is that WE worked for this four years and I damn well expect THEM to support HIM.

" I wish Frist and the GOP had broken the DEM tactic before now."

Curious to know if you think it should have been tried before the election of 2004? Before passing the transportation Bill?
