In many ancient cultures, having an overweight wife was a sign of wealth. It meant that you were a good provider. Also, hefty women were far more likely to survive famine and disease, making them better mothers and more likely to raise their children to adulthood.

As for dragging a travois, many of the ancient cultures that created mother-figures were fairly stationary. Evidence of long term firepit use suggests that they probably didn't move more than once or twice a year, if at all, and any movement was strictly seasonal. In all likelyhood, hunting was limited to men and more muscular women prior to their becoming mothers. Once they bore children, the womans role shifted to gathering and became more sedentary.
