ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Republican Edward Cox, a son-in-law of President Nixon, will soon form an exploratory committee for an expected run against Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a top adviser said Tuesday.
Lynn Mueller, an Albany-based consultant, said the budding campaign has already hired fundraisers and a pollster.
Asked about the chances that Cox will challenge Clinton for re-election in 2006, Mueller said: "It's as close to 100 percent as you can get unless something bizarre happens, which we don't expect."
Mueller said a federal campaign committee will probably be operating by the end of June and a formal announcement will probably come this fall.
GOP leaders have been looking for a strong challenger to beat or at least bloody Clinton in 2006 and make a 2008 presidential bid by her more difficult. Polls show the former first lady is the Democratic front-runner for the White House nomination.
Cox, 58, married Tricia Nixon in a Rose Garden ceremony in 1971. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he worked with consumer advocate Ralph Nader and is a partner in the law firm of Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler.
Clinton, as a young lawyer, worked in Washington on the impeachment proceedings against Nixon.
I don't know if this guy has money or not to fund his own campaign. I really don't know anything about him. I wish there was more info on him.
Personally i lost hope for NY but i do wish his campaign well and hope that he beats the odds and actually takes her down :)
I think that's where we all are. Even if he just puts a scare into The Beast, whether or not he actually beats her will not matter too much. She'll still run in 08 whether she's a senator or an ex-senator.
Lynn Mueller, an Albany-based consultant said the Cox camp has lined up Cathy Blaney of Manhattan and the Austin, Texas-based Olsen & Shuvalov firm for fundraising. Blaney is a veteran fundraiser for Pataki while Todd Olsen and Heather Shuvalov, direct-mail specialists, have strong ties to Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser.
The Cox adviser said polling will be done by Fred Steeper, a veteran Bush pollster.
This might be a chance to set the story straight (including Hillary's role in the taking down of a President who did much less than her husband). Cool!
LOL! You Go ED!
I can see tons of money going to anyone who can hang the label of "loser" on Hillary. The danger is, we risk pouring too much money into defeating her, and not getting rid of less odious (but still powerful) Rats.
That's what the other side has done, dumped bucketloads of cash into loser campaigns, starving viable Rats who needed money to get re-elected. We need to make sure that they're the only ones who do something that stupid.
I'd like to see the early handicapping on this one. I think Rudy would knock her off if he would run, which of course he won't. On the other hand, I don't know much about Cox however I'm encouraged by some of the other remarks here.
It would be a day of national celebration if Cox ever defeated Hildebeast. However, there is about zero chance of that happening as things stand now. Hitlery's negatives are extremely low in New York -- about 28 percent, with about 67 percent positives. And the people who support her adore her and would walk across hot coals to vote for her. And sorry, it isn't just New York City, although that is the hotbed of Hitlery Worship. Her ratings are through the roof in all the major population centers. The good people who hate her live on the dairy farms or in small mountain villages. I've lived in both NYC and Central New York -- from what I can see, most people are proud to have a national figure as their Senator. It makes me ill, but I'm just trying to be realistic. There are probably about 35 Rat Senators we have a better chance of knocking off than Hitlery. Sure, we have to put somebody up against her, but it's a real long shot.
I'll send $$$ to whoever runs against her. But it is sad how many traditionally Republican areas of Upstate were just googly-eyed over Hitlery. Still, we have to do what we can, and as you said it would be a fun race to watch. I think Rudy could have beaten her in 2000, but I'm not so sure even he could now.
Unfortunately we went to the Dutchess County Fair in 2000 on the day Her-Thigh-ness appeared. At first we didn't know what the hubbub was so I asked a little older lady who was standing around wearing one of those straw hats with a red/white/blue ribbon on it. She got the most beatific look on her face and said "It's Hillery!" Like she expected me to genuflect or something. I think I made a face and probably a remark and moved on. It was totally disgusting.
Hey. Cox wouldn't be bad. The New York Republican Party is in such disarray that it doesn't seem to know it's ass from its elbow. We're resigned to settle with a Bloomberg for mayor because he's got the money to win and he shines compared to what the Democrats have to offer. There are a lot of great young minds in the Republican in NY.......why aren't these people being groomed? It seems like Joe Bruno just keeps on dancing the six hand reel with the likes of Elliot Spitzer and Sheldon Silver and it continues to be the same ol' same ol'
As long as the media is controlled by Leftists, there is little chance of unseating this witch. None of the corruption she is involved in and none of her ineffectiveness ever gets into the mass media. The only kind of serious contender would be an Ahnold - media hype type - Rudy - an average person like this Cox fellow will get beaten badly.
Things are really bad in this state.

Free travel, briefings, security, voting power, staff, and, and, and, .
Yeah, I just moved from there last summer, so I know what you are talking about. But now I'm in Massachusetts -- no improvement. In all honesty, though, the differences are not all that great -- which is a worse duo, Hitlery/Chuckie or The Swimmer/Kerry? Hard to pick. At least New York has a few decent Congressmen sprinkled around the state. Both have RINO governors, although Mitt is probably better than Pataki. Slim pickings any way you cut it.
