Mexico's Fox Regrets Race Comment
cbs ^ | 5-16-05

President Vicente Fox reversed course Monday night and apologized for saying that Mexicans in the United States do the work that blacks won't.

Fox repeatedly refused to back away from his Friday comment, saying his remark had been misinterpreted. But later, in telephone conversations with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton the president said he "regretted" the statement.

"The president regretted any hurt feelings his statements may have caused," the Foreign Relations Department said in a press statement. "He expressed the great respect he and his administration has for the African-American community in the United States."

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City had raised the issue with the Mexican government. "That's a very insensitive and inappropriate way to phrase this and we would hope that (the Mexicans) would clarify the remarks if they have a chance," Boucher said.

Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, said Mexican and foreign news media have misinterpreted the remark as a racial slur. He said the president was speaking in defense of Mexican migrants as they come under attack by the new U.S. immigration measures that include a wall along the U.S.-California border.

I just watched Al Sharpton on Hannity and Colmes---

He said that Fox apologized but also invited Sharpton down to Mexico to talk about it and other immigration problems--that is what we need, Sharpton and Fox "working out our immigration problems", uh, huh....

Anyway, Sean said if Sharpton goes to Mexico, that he wants to go with him--but when he asked Sharpton if he asked Fox to make a formal apology, Sharpton said "NO, because after all he is a HEAD OF STATE and has to watch what he says...."----Now why do I think that if Bush said anything even close to what Fox said, that Sharpton would want Bush to not only formally apologize, but quit the presidency?

I just saw Sharkton on H&C. He didn't waste any time getting around to accusing the minutemen of breaking some unnamed law.

I find it interesting that he apologized to two blacks who don't work.

You could just as easily put whites into his statement.

I felt that his comments were not only demeaning to blacks but Mexicans as well. It is time for Mexico to get a leader who takes care of his own instead of attaching his country like a parasite to the underbelly of this country.

If I remember it correctly he said that "Mexican Immigrants are doing work that even Blacks won't do" or words to that effect. For that Al Sharpton and others are hammering him.

For years I have seen Mexicans work at backbreaking jobs in agriculture. They are highly represented in service jobs such as maids, cooks, busboys, and lawn care workers. If there is proof that black Americans are trying hard to get into these occupations, and can't because Mexicans are being hired instead, I want to see it.

Back in the 80's , I recall then Prime Minister Nakasone of Japan saying that the reason the Japanese were clobbering the USA in trade was because American quality / workmanship were down because there were too many blacks in the work force . Paraphrasing , of course , but that was the jist of what he said . Anybody else remember that ?

I should have clarified; the perception from the outside is the one Fox has. I am not saying it is necessarily accurate or right, but it isn't far off. After reading/listening to the info on the links in my post, I don't see much to argue with Fox on.

Your point was clear enough. If black Americans want to do the jobs Mexicans are doing, let's see the proof.

What Fox said wasn't wrong. It was politically incorrect, and that's far worse.
