In the long term, Spector's resignation would improve the quality of the Senate, even if he were replaced by a Democrat. However, if that happened it would not be before the solution of the judicial nominating question. And on that, the votes are buttoned up for victory, or Senator Frist would not have made his public announcement last week.
So, between now and the time when Frist pulls the trigger with Cheney presiding as President of the Senate, we will hear a lot of words but they mean nothing and are mere posturing.
Senator Dornan is now up, and the one person he made a point of introducing was Gerald MacAtee (sp.?), President of AFSME for more than 30 years. The unions are dying in America, and so is the Democrat Party which is their wholly owned subsidiary. Y'all are listening today to the death rattle of a major political party.

Re the Specter rumor..while it would cost the GOP a seat for now..ITLR, it might be a good thing...and if they but casey into Specter's seat..it means the Dems are worried about him beating Santorum...so that would set up a Casey/Toomey race in 2006...and we get a new SJC chair immediately...
