Why would democrat Rendell appoint a republican to fill Spector's senate seat? (sorry, if I'm dense on this). Our best Georgia senator, republican Coverdale died in office, and Demo governor appointed democrat Zell Miller to fill the seat. (We sure lucked out, didn't we?)

Might be required to appoint a Pubbie. Some states require replacement appointments be from the same party as the departing pol.

Plus .. Santorum is up for relection in 06 and the dems will want to pick up both Senate seats
