Everything I learned about successful TV from 'Everybody Loves Raymond'
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | May 15, 2005 | Rob Owen

The success of CBS's "Everybody Loves Raymond" offers several lessons today's TV executives would do well to recognize:

It takes time to grow a hit.

When "Raymond" premiered in September 1996, the show aired at 8:30 p.m. Friday and had terrible ratings. Critics raved about it, but viewers didn't find it. CBS paid attention to the critical plaudits and moved "Raymond" to 8:30 p.m. Monday in 1997, where it grew into a hit.

By the way, you must really be weak-willed if gave up TV because of manufacturer's trying to sell you stuff!

And your tag line says you are on the radio? mmmm..wonder who pays the bills for that. Why...I'll bet it's advertisers. Wow. Imagine that.

And, not that you need to know, I've also had my first novel published. Seems I've found time to do everything I've wanted to do, and share some time and some laughs with my wife and family.

Interesting how you just seem coming back to the "TV is a waste of time" argument. I'll bet there's plenty that you enjoy that others would think was a waste of time. But that's your decision.

Shows a lack of class on your part for denigrating those that enjoy things you don't.

Now..really...truly...good day. lol

Oh ......Boy...........

No......I'm not weak willed....I've dealt with advertising agencies for over 30 years...and I know what media is really used for.

No....I pay my bills with my own money. I'm on a local radio show and I talk real Conservatism.....not the kind you hear on the radio so much today. I use the money I made not watching TV to have my own show.

A friend of mine owns a radio station and I have my own slot in drive time in the afternoon.

My show is pretty popular and I use the show to ....TADA....advertise my services.....so there!!!!!!!!

Good for you as far as the novel. I think that yes you are probably right....moderation in everything. And I'm not attacking anyone for watching TV...it's just that I know of so many people who waste away not really living life to the fullest.

Didn't a guy named Henry David once say...."Most men lead quiet lives of desperation"?

Of course there are exceptions. But far too many people live their lives vicariously by the boob tube.

Obviously you are not one of them.

I DID READ it and...it still says the same thing. Or...you were talking about OTHER PEOPLE'S children.

Plain and simple (and without the scarcasm) If you dont' like it...don't watch it.

Excellent writers on both shows. Seems to me those shows show people as they really are and not the fantasy worlds a lot of the sitcoms would make you believe. At least Seinfeld has locks on his doors. Raymond does too but doesn't always use them and Cheers? Couldn't beat it with a stick. Seinfeld, Cheers and Everybody Loves Raymond. Classics.

I prefer to live a life of tasting all it has to offer.

Like clicking on threads about TV shows you are not interested in....

Well, that's a much better way to spend your time than watching Crap TV.

If you didn't care what people thought of you, you wouldn't be on this thread bragging about how you're more sophisticated than Raymond watchers.

Problem: "Oddly enough, I can't do that now that I have a satellite dish..."

Soloution: TIVO

TIVO has set us free of commercials and broadcast times. We watch what we want, when we want and no stupid commercials.

Everyone gets flamed.

Not everyone whines about it like you do.

Those two characters clearly don't like each other

They clearly love each other.

I'm sorry for you that they finally stopped running Father Knows Best.

(I liked that one, too).

Maybe you should stop wasting your life talking about TV you don't watch. But I guess you have nothing better to do.

So, you spend your time learning debate instead of watching television?

I knew you were nothing but insults. You are as predictable as those lousy sitcoms.

I could be wrong, but to me it seems that you are stuck on this Everybody Loves Raymond show.

May come as a shock to you that I've never watched it. I haven't watched network comedies since Seinfeld went off the air.

Beyond that, I have no clue why you've taken it upon yourself to lecture to everyone on the way you do things in life. There is this God given gift called "individuality", enjoy it.

If you want to read by candlelight, knock yourself out. I prefer to be bathed in the glow of a 100w lightbulb.

I started watching some of those shows like Cheers on TV Land. I had no time in the world to sit down and watch them when were in first-time run on TV, I had two jobs, one part time, and one full time, while attending high school. You're right though, Cheers is another one of those shows with excellent writing and plotlines.

You know, I can't wait to get home to read the last page of this thread. For some reason, believe it or not, the last page of this thread cannot be displayed in my school because the Web Security says that it beat the threshold of questionable words. (Score = 55).

Go figure.
