Naperville woman’s dog fights off attacker
Daily Herald ^ | May 14, 2005 | Jake Griffin

Naperville police are crediting a woman’s 100-pound dog with saving her from further harm by an assailant near her apartment.

Sgt. Joel Truemper said the woman, who police did not name, had taken her dog for a short walk around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when she was jumped from behind, knocked to the ground, choked and punched in the face.

The woman’s dog, a Great Pyrenees, bit the attacker in the face and chest, she told police.

Truemper said there was no blood trail left by the assailant and a check of area hospitals for men seeking treatment for dog bites was unsuccessful.

“Instead of letting the guy get chewed up by her dog, she grabbed the dog and ran back into her apartment to call police,” Truemper said.

According to the American Kennel Club’s Web site, the Great Pyrenees is “territorial and protective of his flock or family when necessary. His general demeanor is one of quiet composure, both patient and tolerant.”

Police quickly responded to the reported attack in the apartment complex near Washington Street and Warrenville Road, but did not find anyone who saw or heard the fracas.

Naperville Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the woman’s attacker. Callers can remain anonymous and still receive rewards. Anyone with information is asked to call (630) 420-6006.

The suspect fled toward Washington after the attack. He was described as in his 30s, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He had brown hair and was wearing a dark baseball cap, gray shirt and dark pants.

Police said they were not investigating any similar attacks in the city and called this type of crime rare.

I might have to do that as well.

I need to explain to my Lab that she is not supposed to lick strangers like they are her long lost friends.

Why run away so quickly? A few more minutes would have saved her several dollars on dog food.

Yeah, but Basenji's seem possessed by the devil. They emit noises like Linda Blair in the exorcist and they can spin their heads around! That alone should scare the attackers away, so your Basenji need not learn to attack.

A friend of mine had two great pyrenees to protect her cows and goats. They'd take on alligators sunning themselves and packs of feral dogs.

Any cat enthusiats going to share a similar feline-chewing-on-attacker story?

My basenji only makes Linda Blair noises when I won't let him go kill a possum. The rest of the time he barks normally, as I trained him to do, with some difficulty. I will not disagree with your sense that they're possessed by the devil, especially when I come home from work and find that this one has chewed up all my son's GI Joes and t.p.'d every room in the house with Extra-Soft Charmin.
