NEW YORK A trial balloon for a Cheney for President run in 2008 is being launched by a surprising source, Washington Post star reporter (and White House insider) Bob Woodward.
Some critics claim that Dick Cheney has already been president for five years, so why should he go to the trouble of seeking the office (again) in 2008? But Woodward, appearing on Chris Matthews' NBC talk show on Sunday, labeled Vice President Cheney “a serious dark horse candidate.” He said that with "a number of people" going for the GOP nomination, “a guy named George Bush might come out and say ‘What about Dick?’"
Woodward observed that "there's a serious vacuum right now," with Senators Frist, Brownback, and Allen leading the field, some say.
There may be a precedent for this. Cheney worked behind the scenes to gain the VP nod in 2000 -- put in charge of finding a suitable candidate he ended up suggesting himself.
This is what's worrisome about Dr. Rice. She's too polite and her voice tends to quaver. No experience at campaigning, and the run for the presidency is big league campaigning. Too nice to deliver a punch, or too afraid to offend, Rice could snatch defeat in '08, even against Hillary. Not that I expect it'll be Hillary.

Senator Allen attended the University of Virginia and played QB, if I remember correctly.
As a Virginia Tech fan I give Senator Allen a lot of credit for helping my Hokies get into the ACC. First year in the ACC and the Hokies win the football championship.
Back to Cheney, he was my pick for the GOP nominee in 96 when Dole got it. Cheney did not run, for whatever reason, and in my opinion he would have beat Clinton. I have always been a Cheney fan and wish his age and health permitted him to run on 08. I'm afraid his time has passed.

Exactly...remember last year all the speculation that Cheney would be replaced by someone else as VP for the campaign. There are long long threads here on FR from last year about it.

Allen is my choice too. He has many of the same qualities
that make GW so appealing.
1) Condi has stated she isn't running.
2) I've never seen Condi cower from any fight. You would be the first I've ever seen suggest that. If anything she is at times even more blunt than the President himself. Further this woman is smart, witty, articulate, quick thinking, with the ability to disarm with a smile. She'd rip Hillary to shreads without breaking a sweat. If you doubt the fear Hillary holds towards Condi, review the knives drawn against here during her confirmation and the weeks following. It isn't Condi in fear, it is Hillary Clinton.

From my personal standpoint I'm relunctant to support any Senator. That view can be altered if they can prove themselves against their Democrat and RINO collegues. This battle over Bolton and the Judiciary is a good test of what they are made of.
It isn't enough that one by outspoken. I need to see proof they have what it takes to overcome the odds and win. The President has won victories against these people. If A Senator is going to be chosen our representative the quickest way to lead the pack is to illustrate they have the ability to deliver a serious blow to the opposition. An opposition they work closely with. If they cannot beat those they are best positioned to know the weakness of, how ever will they deal with the expected opposition that always arises later in office from unexpected sources? This is a leadership test they must pass to move into the next round.
Though, to be fair, I'd say at least half the people on this board or in the base fear Hillary Clinton. They are hardly in a position to critisize. But as these Senators are elected to serve us, they must be held to higher standard. I, on the other hand, think Hillary is a very weak candidate who is only where she is because she a) Driven b) latched onto the Clinton name c) decent advisors.
She is an aging woman with enormous baggage, poor speaker, poor political acumen, moderately intelligent but not a genius by any stretch, nor is she well liked even by her own base. This isn't a woman I fear.
It's not un-Constitutional, just unwise. The Constitution says that a Presidential Elector must vote for one Presidential and one Vice-Presidential candidate who is not a citizen of the same State as the elector, or that vote will not be counted. The practical effect is to force Electors to vote for a 'ticket' which has a President and Vice-Presidential candidate from different States.
If an Elector tried voting for a Presidential/Vice-Presidential same-State ticket which was the Elector's State, then most probably they would choose not to vote for the Vice-Presidential candidate so that their Presidential vote would still count. The bottom line is that the Vice-Presidential candidate of a same-State ticket would loose the electoral votes of his home State.
