NEW YORK A trial balloon for a Cheney for President run in 2008 is being launched by a surprising source, Washington Post star reporter (and White House insider) Bob Woodward.
Some critics claim that Dick Cheney has already been president for five years, so why should he go to the trouble of seeking the office (again) in 2008? But Woodward, appearing on Chris Matthews' NBC talk show on Sunday, labeled Vice President Cheney a serious dark horse candidate. He said that with "a number of people" going for the GOP nomination, a guy named George Bush might come out and say What about Dick?"
Woodward observed that "there's a serious vacuum right now," with Senators Frist, Brownback, and Allen leading the field, some say.
There may be a precedent for this. Cheney worked behind the scenes to gain the VP nod in 2000 -- put in charge of finding a suitable candidate he ended up suggesting himself.
President Cheney? Sounds good to me!!
I don't think he wants it either--and I don't think Lynn would want him to have to go through the SH!T he would have to go through as a candidate--he has served this country well, and deserves some time with his family, IMHO.
BUT, what is to keep Bush, after 2006, if he likes Frist, and Frist is no longer a senator, from replacing Cheney with Frist for two years....or even George Allen?
I don't think the American electorate will vote for someone who has had as many publicized heart attacks as Cheney...I love the guy but I just don't think he'll fly...we'll lose the WH if we run him...
Deep Theoret-ical.
If he does run, he'll have to overcome the health question. His fortunes will also turn on how well the Bush Administration is faring in the final two years of the term. Plus there will be people who'll vote against him just because they think eight years is enough.
That said, he'd overshadow any likely primary opponent, likely waltz to the nomination. I don't think he'll run, though.
Cheney/Rice 2008
Fun scenario to contemplate.
It was not a poplular idea, but I wouldn't have been surprised if Cheney had "stepped aside" last summer, I thought that the leaking of further heart problems was possibly a way to "set the stage" for it.
I must say it's refreshing to read a piece that when discussing the 2008 Republican field does NOT mention McCain or Hagel. Because no way in hell are they going to get that nomination.
Cheney doesn't want it. I will admit the idea of him running against any of the Democrats amuses me. He isn't intimidated by them. Whoever we select must evidence the same lack of fear. Anyone that crawls into a hole when Hillary walks by need not apply.
Agreed.
To me, too.
Now, a couple points about this article:
#1 "Some critics claim that Dick Cheney has already been president for five years, so why should he go to the trouble of seeking the office (again) in 2008?"
Even under the laughable assumption that that claim is true, does anyone understand that argument? I'd like an elaboration.
#2 "There may be a precedent for this. Cheney worked behind the scenes to gain the VP nod in 2000 -- put in charge of finding a suitable candidate he ended up suggesting himself."
I always thought George Bush asked Cheney to be his vice president, got turned down, and then put Cheney in charge of finding a good candidate. After Cheney finished his search, the president asked him again. Am I wrong?
not true! GWB wanted him to be his running mate, and Cheney declined, but offered to help find a suitable running mate... GWB finally convinced him to run with him... (and he agreed because he liked what he saw in GWB.)
Cheney-Pence is Okay with me.Since Cheney will not run it should be Pence-Cheney.
I know, but the mainstream press always uses this a "proof" that Bush isn't really in charge, it's just Cheney "pulling his strings."
He'd be a great President.
He has been a fine VP...would make an excellent President. But I think him and Lynn, just want to move back to thier ranch in Wyoming. And relax and spend time with grandkids, etc. But if he chooses to make a run, hey I would support him.
America would be in good hands.
What about his health?
I know---and in 2006, it would be a good chance, to "change" because of "health" reasons---because, after all, there really ISN'T a solid front running CONSERVATIVE candidate out there right now...
I heard Boxer say the funniest thing the other day---she was being inteviewed about the judicial nominees situation and she mentioned that the only reason that Frist is doing this is because of his future political aspirations---then she invoked Bob Dole's name and said that at least Bob Dole had the "integrity" to step down when he was running for President, instead of "using" his postition to campaign....
Boy, does SHE have a short, teeny-tiny, memory, doesn't she!!! LOL
