China requests "serious investigation" into conflict between Russian police and Chinese workers
China has requested that Russian authorities "seriously investigate" the conflict between Russian police and Chinese workers occurring Wednesday night and take measures to prevent such things from happening in the future, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Saturday in a press release.
Spokesman Kong Quan said the conflict occured when Irkutsk police conducted inspections on the Chinese workers. About 200 Chinese workers were involved in the incident. "Dozens were injured, and some were hospitalized," he said.
"The issue has aroused great concern from the Chinese government," Kong said. The Chinese consulate general in Khabarovsk made immediate representations to Russia upon hearing of the incident. On Friday night, Huang Ping, deputy director of the Department of Consular Affairs with the Foreign Ministry, urgently summoned the Russian Embassy officials in China.
Kong said China has asked Russia to conduct "serious investigation" into the issue, punish the troublemakers and try its best to treat the injured Chinese.
"China also urged Russia to take effective measures to prevent such things from happening again," he said.
The Chinese consulate general in Khabarovsk and local departments will soon sent deputies to Irkutsk to handle the remaining problems, sources with the Foreign Ministry said.
Ping!
I remember seeing a news report on the NHK (Japanese public TV) about how the Russian side of the Siberian area is so poor, the Russians are being hired by the Chinese to physically haul their wares for market across the border. The Chinese purchase food on the Russian side (it's cheap), transfer it to the Chinese side, and then send it off to Beijing for big profit.
Needless to say, the Russians are not happy about this and consider themselves the "better" of the two.
All your Russian cops are belong to us.
Damnn when Russian cops go LAPD smackdown on Chinese
They need a good old Rodney King style riot over there to spice things up. No particular reason. All kinds of people just went out and robbed places in L.A. Boring TV night?
Recently I had the misfortune to share one of the new 3-tier Russian railway sleepers with 2 Chinese businessmen. They never stopped eating, and for some reason found it necessary to loudly smack their lips with every bite.
I then found it necessary to invite a pair of drunks in to discuss Viktor Tsoy for the rest of the trip.
Stupid Russians! Don't they know that only Chinese policemen are allowed to indiscriminately beat Chinese workers?
I just noticed that you posted this story from the People's Daily too, not Xinhua.
I haven't been over there today so I still don't know what happened.
What is the "incident"?
