Consternation at Ivy League Upstarts Winning an Election
The Boston Globe ^ | 5/14/05 | Marcella Bombardieri

The victory of two dark-horse candidates for Dartmouth College's board of trustees this week has revived a struggle over competing visions for the future of the small Ivy League campus.

Peter Robinson, who wrote speeches for Ronald Reagan and is a fellow at the Hoover Institution, and Todd J. Zywicki, a George Mason University law professor who contributes to a libertarian-leaning web log, ran on platforms that were scathingly critical of the administration, saying it has become too politically correct and has stifled fraternities, de-emphasized athletics, and shortchanged teaching in favor of research.

Hmmm. Sure, the profs at Hangover are real thrilled about conservative outsiders coming in and no doubt asking hard questions. Suuuuure!

And they broke the hold of the existing procedures which ensured the election of only rubber stamping trustees, by running their campaign on the internet. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here.

What happened to Jeffrey Hart, professor there and a contributor to National Review? He must be well along in years, if he's still around.

Robinson, who graduated in 1979, has said Dartmouth is interested in the alumni's money but not their advice. The Internet, he said, has helped graduates gain new influence; the campaign for the board was marked by sparring on student and alumni web logs.[emphasis added]

Another conservative electoral influence of weblogs.

Darmouth used to be a very preppy and Republican school. The liberals grabbed and wrecked it, and think they own it as they think they own anything they have soiled enough times. But the alums and trustees aren't like that, they went to the old Dartmouth, and they know what has been lost. There is no reason they should put up with this crap.

Until someone organizes the conservative alumnae and gets them to boycott donations until the school is changed, I think this will be a token victory.
