IRVING, Texas - The moment was packed with the kind of tension usually seen only at a major. In the locker room at the Byron Nelson Championship, players huddled around the television as Tiger Woods stood over a 15-foot putt. Upstairs in the family dining area, about 60 people set down their silverware and stopped their chatter to watch. On the course, the 1,500 fans surrounding the 18th green went stone silent.
They witnessed something that had not happened on the PGA Tour in seven years and 142 tournaments.
Woods missed the cut.
"Every guy in the locker room was watching," Jesper Parnevik said. "We're not allowed to bet, but guys were offering $1,000 he would make it."
No wonder there were no takers.
Woods made a slippery 6-foot birdie putt at Torrey Pines three years ago to make the cut on the number. He made a downhill par putt from 4 feet in the Masters two years ago to do the same thing. And who can forget that 6-foot putt in the 2000 PGA Championship to force a playoff, or that 15-footer in the dark at the Presidents Cup.
Maybe that's what was so surprising about this one.
He studied the line from both sides, consulted his caddie, then stood over the ball and went through his routine. One look at the cup. Shift his feet and give it another look. A third look and pull the trigger.
The ball broke gently to the right toward the cup, then flattened out in the final 6 inches and trickled by, a dramatic end to one of the greatest streaks in sports.

Agreed....so is Bonds
Wasn't it Arnold Palmer's wife who said that for luck she always kissed his um, ...
I've been in roughs worse than that!
Errr...his cheek? I hope :-)
While not everyone can become a great golfer and reach the pro lever, anyone on earth can become a decent player if they practice enough. The same can't be said for other sports like baseball or tennis. Someone can practive 24 hours a day every day for years and yet never be able to hit a baseball very well. If the athleticism isn't there, you cannot succeed in sports like baseball and tennis.
I'll never understand why someone would stay on a thread to talk about how boring it is.
Does this make sense to you?
The golf swing is the baseball swing is the tennis swing is the boxing punch is the basketball pass is the hockey slap shot. It is just a hell of a lot harder than any of those to do correctly. It is the athletic movement that makes golf a sport. Pure stamina is admirable but not related to the athletic movement. A professional golfer can refine the swing to a degree that allows a little guy like Ian Woosnam hit a straight drive 300 yards almost every time while Michael Jordan can only occasionally accomplish it.
I would love to fly in bare feet - but am always concerned about the remote possibility that I'll need to jump.
Parachuting in bare feet doesn't seem appealing.
Right now, I wear nomex racing boots - sexy... don't you think? Especially in shorts. wooohooo!
;-)
Agreed.
I just posted before to Beyond... why stay on a thread if we're all jerks and the sport is boring?
Go play outside - and leave us to our own.
Not even close.
"If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."
Dodgeball, the movie, the sport.
Did all of that happen to Bonds, Mc Gwire, Romanowski, Terrel Owens and 90 of the NFL???
There are hundreds of types of roids and if used correctly, won't kill you.
Compare Tiger today to the Tiger on his wedding day last Nov. 30 lbs of difference.
20 would be about standard for the big names on tour, as they have other commitments beyond simply playing on tour. Being able to select and choose which tournaments you play in does take away from the record a bit. There are also a few tournaments every year without a cut that still count towards the record. I don't mean to degrade his cut record because compared to his peers, no one is close to him.
I'm laughing - if you look at anyone and compare their HS picture to their wedding picture - they probably gained 30 pounds.
I'm assuming that my best friend is on steroids too - since she put on about 30 pounds with her first child. Oh - and my the guy next door - he gained 30 pounds when he got married again - he's 50 - yep -- it's the 'roids.
LOL!!!
PS.. yes, it did happen to Bonds, McGwire and Romanowski.
Life's tough all over! ;-)
20 is low...Tiger does not play as much as the average tourer. He picks his tourneys....and generally plays in the more elite ones & avoids courses that don't pay as much or suit his game. VJ is an iron man and plays almost every week.<p.Even Tiger admits that if he played that much, he'd lose his edge.
