United Attendants Pose for Risque Calendar

CHICAGO -- While some United Airlines employees are using placards and pamphlets to protest the loss of their pensions, a group of flight attendants is taking a more risque tack — showing some skin to publicize their plight.

The five women, ranging in age from 55 to 64, posed for a 2006 calendar that depicts them in various states of undress in front of a vintage plane, on a park bench and on a plane's wing, among other locations. Reflecting a mix of humor and anger, it was released to coincide with a bankruptcy court's approval this week of United's plan to terminate $9.8 billion in employee pension obligations.

While United is never named nor its airplanes shown, every photograph in "Stewardesses Stripped (Of Their Pension?)" is accompanied by a zinger related to the record pension default by the Elk Grove Village, Ill.-based airline.

"Coffee, tea, or me without a pension?" reads one. "Marry me, fly free — but don't expect anything from my pension," says another. And the cover shot: "Are your butts covered? We thought ours were too."

LOL, sounds like these girls are a little immature for their age.

I don't get it. There seems to be an increase in the number of people that think getting naked is an effective way to "protest". Remember the freaks in NY during the convention? The lady with some strange message scrawled across her breast in front of Prince Charles? Me when my wife refused to finish mowing the yard yesterday - never mind that.

Here's another one. The guy dropped his pants in French Parliament to reveal the word "non" written across his ass.

I was born in the wrong era. I should have been born in the era of romantic airline travel where the stewardesses were gorgeous and almost always under 35. Now it seems like all are over 50.

Sounds like they need therapy more than a flashbulb. What is their problem?

They sound like older Baby Boomers who didn't get enough rebellion, sex, and immature behavior out of their systems in the 1960's.

"I should have been born in the era of romantic airline travel where the stewardesses were gorgeous and almost always under 35. Now it seems like all are over 50."

Well, I barely made it in under the wire. I'm 48 and turned 18 in 1975, and I flew PSA up and down California several times a year. Yowza! PSA stewardesses were adorable and wore those multicolor hot pants. I can't say much for the other airlines but I expect the same was generally true.

Why are all the "flight attendants" dumpy, grumpy ladies now? For two reasons.

First, there was a famous age discrimination lawsuit brought against one of the airlines in the 1970s. You see, airlines saw stewardess jobs not as lifetime affairs but as entry-level jobs for young ladies before they got on with their lives -- as married women, or college degrees, or whatever. The pay was modest, the destinations were fun and exciting, and many of the young ladies met their future husbands while working. Not a bad arrangement. But the lawsuit ended all that when a few of the stewardesses, losers to the last one, sued to keep their jobs for 10, 15, or more years. The lawsuit also ended the physical appearance requirements.

The second reason they're so dumpy is buried in the first. Even today, some young ladies see the job as an entry into the workplace, and they soon more on. But it's the losers who stick with it and make a career out of it. That's why overweight, dumpy women tend to dominate. I have three friends who are pilots and each affirms this.

But now that their pensions are gone, I believe the situation will actually improve. It will become an entry-level job, like restaurant hostess/waitress.

The old days. Sigh ...

I got all excited, and then I read this: "The five women, ranging in age from 55 to 64".

Oh well.

BTW, killing the pension of these people when they put their whole life into the firm pretty much sucks a&&

Hm. Maybe aging won't suck so bad after all.

Those ladies are not 55-64. If those aren't in their late 20's or 30's, I am going to have to start taking more flights to reduce my age.
