Mayor Tom Potter reponds to Pentagon plan to reduce strength of Portland Air National Guard
Press release from the Office of Mayor Tom Potter
"I am saddened for the 452 civilians who will lose their jobs with this decision, and concerned about the safety of our community.
"I am going to work with our delegation in Washington, D.C. to reverse this decision. It makes little sense to send family wage jobs packing to other states just as Portland's economy is finally moving in a positive direction.
"At the same time, I don't want to see our area's ability to respond to any emergency or outside threat diminished by sending our pilots and planes elsewhere.
"When you look at the pattern of closures across the nation, I don't believe Portland has been singled out for its progressive political stands with this decision. Our delegation has heard rumors this base might be on the chopping block for the last 18 months. Still, it makes no sense to do this now."
To me this appears to be another case of 'Chickens Coming Home to Roost.'
First, Portland doesn't want any part of the military or anything resembling national defense.
Understandably, the U.S. federal government proceeds with what seems to be a logical choice for base closure and domestic military defense cutbacks.
Next, the "Portanders" and other state government morons make a pity party out of not the military cutbacks but the civilian employees no longer necessary when the cutbacks hit.
They got what they wanted, but when they got it it turned out to be a little more than what they thought their silly rhetoric entailed.
Liberals.
I rest my case.
( ( ( ( *Ping* ! ) ) ) . . .
"When you look at the pattern of closures across the nation, I don't believe Portland has been singled out for its progressive political stands with this decision."
'Course not. But need your 18 jets to defend Americans.
Well, I hear our ANG base in Fresno is gonna grow. I like watching the F-16s launching on full burner and climbing out to do CAP somewhere. Thunder is the sound of freedom.
Looks like somebody's listening.
I just moved to Southern Oregon from California and I have got to say, both that mayor and the governor are as much the looney nut jobs as the perverts in the California legislature.
What is up with that governor we have here in Oregon?
He forgot to say deeply saddened...
Or, maybe since they like homosexual monogamy, deeply sodomed...
I love the sound of blue state pigs squealing in the morning
I strongly doubt Portland politics had anything to do with it. The military is smarter than that.
Using the same logic I'm reading from these comments, I suppose the colonists should have just shut up and went along with the tyrany of England. You know, we shouldn't have upset King George III with that little 'ole... what was it called... ah yes, American Revolution. Because, well, he was THE King and we should all respect the King just as we do the President, right? Err... wait a second.
Perhaps Portlanders don't want to take part in the tyrany of our bloated, out of control federal government. Last time I checked my conservative handbook, it said "Big Government -- NO". So, there's my nickle and two bits.
You signed up tomorrow to post that drivel tonight?
ROTFLMAO!
I'm in a Air Guard unit at the Portland Airbase. This writing was on the wall a long time ago. With the AF bringing F-22 squadrons on line, the need for as many F-15 squadrons is just not there. Add in the fact that UAV's are taking over many of the jobs that the F-15's do and you have a decision to make. Either keep the fighter airbase in a community where it's wanted, that has newer facilities, and has a MUCH lower cost of living. (Klamath Falls) or keep PANG operational even though the city doesn't like it, the airport wants to expand to the airbase side, the cost of living is nearing San Francisco levels, and the buildings are much older.
Pretty simple decision if you ask me. I hope they move my unit closer to Salem. (I'm not involved with the fighter squadron)
Thanks, Tailback for relaying the FACTS of the matter. It's amazing the speculation and assuption some people indulge in.
This radical mayor is as bad or worse than his wack-job predecessor.
Thanks for posting this information, Tailback. Very helpful to have more detailed information. I was laughing out loud tonight while the local television news reporters were featuring the Guv and quoting Ron Wyden. It sounded to me like the libs in control were running in circles, afraid of their own shadows.
"I am saddened for the 452 civilians who will lose their jobs with this decision, and concerned about the safety of our community
He should have thought about that before he threatned the FBI....stupid liberal.
