Threat May Land Woman in Prison
The Peoria Journal-Star ^ | May 13, 2005 | ANDY KRAVETZ

PEORIA - A Pekin woman faces up to 10 years in federal prison for allegedly threatening President Bush by telling him in a letter she had put anthrax in the note.

Jessica A. Moyer, 21, appeared in U.S. District Court in Peoria on charges of threatening the president and mailing a threatening communication. She said little except to her attorney, Bill Anderson, during the five-minute hearing.

Moyer's address was listed in court records as 4105 N. Brookdale, Apt. 2C3, but Pekin police report no such address.

The indictment was handed down April 20 but unsealed Thursday. It alleges Moyer sent a letter in Tazewell County on March 5 to President Bush. In that letter, she wrote: "Your time is almost through. Yes, that's right. That's a threat. I have enclosed some anthrax and I hope it is enough to kill you and if it is not, I can send someone to shoot you or something. You are not safe."

The letter was addressed to President Bush, the indictment alleges.

Court records did not disclose how authorities learned of the letter or whether it was delivered to the White House. The letter did not contain anthrax, authorities have said.

Anderson said after the hearing his client is a "very nice young girl, and I am very confident she did not intend to hurt anyone."

The attorney also said Moyer has no criminal record.

Moyer was released on a personal recognizance bond pending her July 5 trial date. As one of her conditions, she must report to an officer with the U.S. Probation Office. She could not be reached for comment.

Of course not.

-- except for the President, of course, whom she threatened to kill.

But other than that, she's a "very nice young girl."

And of course, she leaves a return address where the keystone cops can "rough her up a little bit".

That takes brains.

I think this lawyer needs some work on his defense strategy.

I'm sure she was just confused, and meant to send the letter to someone else.

That's a threat.

If you're going to do this sort of thing, be vague enough that your lawyer can hide behind free speech.

Sending a letter to the President of the United States stating "I am going to kill you" is pretty much as blatant as one can get. Trial should be over in about two minutes, but since our judicial system has a hard enough time with evidence like Simpson DNA at a murder scene, this will probably take a year.

It will be a plea agreement. Her defense lawyer knows a jury would throw away the key. She'll get a slap on the hand and she'll spend the next 30 years boasting about it.

The attorney also said Moyer has no criminal record.

Neither did Jeffery Dahmer until he ate that first one. All crimes get easier after the first one.
