The article doesn't make it clear whether he "invited" the kid to try to take the gun, or if it was the kid's own idea. I suppose that will be a part of the investigation.

An article on the same story previously posted stated explicitly that he told the kid to try to take the gun out of his holster.

When the officer stated how hard it was to do, the student saw it as a challenge. It’s not an uncommon reaction from a kid.
