The Lost Coast Brewery in Humboldt, Calif. says it will take off the shelves its Indica India Pale Ale, whose label currently depicts the Indian elephant-god Ganesh "holding a beer in one of his four hands, and another in his trunk". Although brewery co-owner Barbara Groom said her Hindu friends don't mind the label, a California man named Brij Dhir sued the brewery, along with other defendants such as the Safeway supermarket chain, claiming that it is offensive and intimidates Hindus from practicing their religion. "Dhir seeks at least $25,000 and his lawsuit mentions that $1 billion would be appropriate to compensate Hindus around the world." "It's a hate crime", Dhir told the Contra Costa Times. ("Brewery pulls label showing Hindu god", RealBeer.com, May 9).
Heh, these same lawyers would probably defend the company that showed Jesus getting tanked on the label in the name of free speech.
Instead of pulling it from the shelves, they should have put another beer in one of its other 3 hands and have the elephant-god give the bird sign with its last 2 hands. I'm sick and tired of the P.C./victim/discriminated against/hurt feelings crowd. I'm all for giving Mr. Brij Dhir a blanket party, then a one-way ticket back to whatever hellhole he came here from.
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
--Benjamin Franklin.
Yes, very ironic, since a few beers really open my spigot, so to speak.
LOL- that reminds me of a simpsons episode. Apu says, "I never miss church. I have a shrine to Ganesh in the back room." Homer says "Ganesh, eh? No offense Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out back taking a wizz."
"Laura Ingraham is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
---Petronski
How about $1 trillion from the democrats for their anti-Christian bigotry?
I love it when Apu feels compelled to tell Homer:
"Please do not give my god a peanut."
"Arrogant Bastard" is a GREAT ale, BTW...
I'll go along with that...but beer was here first.
that was Apu's next line in the scene, lol.
Why not get the environmentalists in on the act by calling the beer "Pale Male Ale"
Sorry, not acceptable. Lawyers have not figured out how to do billable hours for boycotts. For now we have to deal with courts.
Get the kar, ma! And get ma hat, ma! We're going out for some Indiga beer! Brewed in caste iron kettles, the taste is untouchable! Maybe we can ride the Brahmin bull while we're there, too!
It is offensive and using a religion's deity for a beer label is stupid. I think there shouldn't be a Sam Adams beer either because it's rude and disrespectful to the founding of this nation. Having said that, it's NOT a hate crime. What is a hate crime is Hindu militants chopping off the heads of Indian christian missionaries and invading their churches. I hope they don't get a penny.
Lol, do not offer my god a peanut.
I'm offended by all those so easily offended.
I'm highly offended that you would have a buxom beauty hugging a large, oversized beer bottle. I'm so offended that I'm making that my wallpaper just to remind me to be offended.
