Should America Build A Holocaust Memorial for the 100 Million Victims of Communism?

Some conservatives were angered by President Bush's decision to attend the military parade in Russia, where the Red Army was honored for its role in World War Two sixty years ago. The Red Army has a record of bloodshed that exceeds even that of the Nazi SS units.

The leaders of Lithuania and Estonia acted on principle, and decided to boycott the military parade in Russia honoring the Red Army, with communist hammer and sickle flags in full display. While we remember the victims of Nazism, we should not forget the tyranny that the Baltics and the rest of Eastern Europe was subjected to for over 40 years.

Communism killed 100 million people in the 20th Century, double the number who died in World War Two. America should build a memorial to victims of the Communist genocides in Ukraine, China, Cambodia, Russia, Vietnam,etc.

Well, we do have a memorial to the many victims of the famine forced upon the people of Ireland by the people of Britain.

I find it odd that the memorial web site states that the memorial, "feature(s) two life-size sculptures, one depicting a family leaving Ireland's shores, impoverished and desperate, and another depicting a family arriving in Boston, filled with hope and determination."

I've viewed this memorial. To me, it obviously portrays one family impoverished, desperate starving and without food. The other family is healthy, carrying a basket filled with food, and shown walking past the destitute family as the mother glances back with a stern disapproving look on her face.

To me, the sculpture represented plentiful England ignoring the starving Irish.

Am I remembering this wrong? Or is the web site being PC?

Yes, and the monument should mention American bankers who bankrolled Soviet revolution.

Without their help, Soviet revolution would not succeed.

Currently, the exclusion of victims of Stalinism and Maoism from the DC Museum, reduces the Museum to a monument to political correctness.

I don't think it's political correctness at all, rather the fact that while American's recognize the evil of Hitler and take pride in his defeat, the view of many toward communism, here and even in Eastern Europe, is mixed. Communism certainly isn't universally reviled as an evil. IMO that would make construction of a museum both more difficult, and potentially more productive.

Regarding Stalin's purge, sure, some Party elites were killed. Tyrants are notoriously and justifiably paranoid. Still, the vast majority of those whom Stalin slaughtered were peasants, farmers, serfs--not the ruling class Communist Party members.

Yea it wasn't honorable for over 8 million Russian troops to lose their lives to fight agaist Hitler.

This was an aside, hence the parentheses. I had to qualify my "yes". I could have qualified my "yes" more succinctly, and I did "rant" a little. Granted.

I know I did rant a bit. But, when anyone talks about putting up a memorial, or any other project that involves money, and potentially public money from the Taxpayer is at risk, the question is always "where is the money" coming from? In order for me to answer "yes" we should put up a memorial (or "no"), I had to qualify my position somewhat.

Many people throughout this country want "their" project funded, "their" memorial, their "artwork," their "R & D", "their" study, etc. You get the point.

Many people instinctively turn to the Government to fund all these little projects, and that's one of the reasons why the National Debt is so high, taxes are proposed and increased, and the IRS is under pressure to collect. These projects ADD UP very quickly. That's why I went on the little rant.

All these things are closely interrelated (projects > taxes > IRS > debt). I could have said "Yes, as long as it's not Taxpayer funded" (8 words max.) and that would have been it, true!
