What's wrong with promoting abstinence-only?

1. It's totally unrealistic;

2. Its supporters KNOW that it is totally unrealistic, and resort to telling outrageous lies in order to convince people of the merits of their argument, as we see in the example of the speaker in this article.

There are, believe it or not, teens who are NOT having sex!

<> According to you. I'm sure there are many, many people who have successfully navigated the teen and adult years while keeping their pants on who would disagree with you. It is realistic, it is most assuredly possible. However, one needs to have a firm grounding in Biblical morality and self-control in order to do so. Self-control - imagine that! Especially in a day and age of "let it all out", "you GO girl", and "just follow your HEART!". Folk like you who have the "they're going to do it anyway, so what the heck" attitude only enable this problem.

"Totally unrealistic"?

I suppose expecting two 'hot & bothered' teens to stop for 'protection', 100% of the time is the height of reality.

Life is about choices, about controlling impulses. One aspect of maturity is the ability to make right choices and to control the impulse to take what I want when I want it.

Observe the speed limit the the school zone, no matter how late I am for class. Learn to apply the brakes before the car is 50 feet from the kindergarteners crossing the intersection. Don't drive on glare ice, if you get the analogy.

I was a 23 year old virgin when I married a wonderful 22 year old virgin woman. For the past 34+ years we have made the CHOICE to remain faithful to each other. This required stifling the IMPULSE to do something that may have seemed very desirable at the moment. This included 2 to 3 years apart while I was on duty overseas, some of it on shore patrol in Olongapo City, the Philippines.

Are you saying that we should teach teenagers (or adults) that if the emotion or desire is strong enough then they are not responsible for their actions?

"Just do it?”

Does this apply to verbal abuse, racial epithets? How about physical violence, shoplifting, ‘borrowing’ a car for a joy ride? Are Mohammed Atta, Richard Speck and Eric Rudolph justified because they really, really wanted to do it?

Get real.

This annoys me very much. Just because, apparently, YOU couldn't be abstinent, it does not mean others cannot be.

My 21 year old daughter is engaged to be married and the thing that bothers her the most are people who automatically assume that she and her fiance are sleeping together.

There a a lot of young young people waiting until marriage.

Just think of the benefits:

NO STD's

NO pregnancies

NO abortions

Sounds good to me.

My husband and I waited and it is wonderful to look my kids in the eye and say YES, it is possible to wait. Hard to wait? Yes, but definately worth it.

Abstinence only is NOT unrealistic. It reflects an expectation of chastity until married and sends the message that a person's most physical self is SPECIAL and PRECIOUS, not some cheap peice of a** to be shared with any and all.

BOTH of my grandmothers and grandfathers were pure on their wedding day. My mother was pure on her wedding day (can't vouch for Dad, I never asked him about it). I was stupid enough to forsake my mother's sage advice and consented, after four years in a relationship and an engagement ring on my finger, to "liberate myself" with my then-fiancee. I ultimately dumped him before finishing college and renewed my vow of chastity UNTIL my husband, who was more than happy to wait for me.

My husband and I plan to raise our kids with the same expectations; if you aren't ready to be parents, aren't ready to get married, you keep your clothes ON. They will also avoid risking STDs, teen pregnancy, the loss of self-esteem, and the stupid emotional entanglements that come from venturing into the adult world too soon. Young people confuse SEX with LOVE, when there is all the world between the two. One need not lie to make their points; the truth is strong enough.

It's very realistic. People abstain from things they desire every day. Most people actually have some self-control.

It worked for my family. It just takes a little self-control.

Uhhh, actually abstinence-only is NOT unrealistic! It worked for centuries, until the 60's when the MTV crowds put out the outrageous LIE that people have absolutely no control over their sexual urges.

The "outrageous lies" are those from the Marxist Left which say the people are no different from dogs and that children should experiment with all kinds of sex--that that is only "natural". The left defends NAMBLA and homosexuals--anything to destroy the cohesive Christian family unit which created the most moral and successful society in the history of the world.
