Sa far Ft Monmouth, NJ; Grotton, CT, Portsmouth Navy, Brunswick Navy and Ellsworth, SD.
I see your reserve center is closing
During the 2004 campaign, Republican John Thune told voters that if elected to replace then Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, his Republican ties would ensure that the base remained open. Daschle said that as minority leader, he would have an appointment to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission and be in a better position to help Ellsworth.
Not that I consider it gospel, nor do I support Daschle. I am simply agreeing with your point that it shouldn't be political.
PING! Come look see who's on the BRAC list. Try not to giggle too much!
No, it's not. But they should be able to merge NAVSUBSCOL into TRITRAFAC fairly easily.
Does that mean Norfolk is safe? Please say "Yes."
Texas has the third largest gain of any state (after Maryland and Georgia).
Naval Air Station Whidbey Island losing 34 military billets but adding 173 civilan jobs for a net gain of 139.
Not that it's up to me, but I would say 'yes'. If anything it's a gain since Norfolk will no doubt get the subs stationed in Groton. Norfolk is far too big to close. There isn't any alternative to it.
Yes, along with Andrews. The Andrews hospital will become a clinc. As I understnd it, there will be a $1-billion joint super-hospital to be built based at Bethesda but under Army control.
Thank God! (for my own selfish reasons.)
It's great comedy for me every time they have one of these base closures. You get these anti-war anti-America anti-military anti-conservative liberal Democrats suddenly turning into instant HAWKS the minute a base closure is threatened in their district.
Here in Austin, we closed Bergstrom Air Force Base in the mid-90s when it hit the endangered list. It's now Bergstrom Airport, replacing the old and poorly designed facility that had become outdated. The old airport is being converted into business and park land.
Yet there were liberal peacenick pols who went ape---- when it was announced the base would need to be closed. Oh, the humanity! Oh, the loss of jobs! Suddenly, these soldiers weren't "baby-killers" anymore!
So when you hear all this crying and posturing about base closures just remember that the government never cancels anything that still has a legitimate need. We should applaud one of the few times it truly does downsize something other than their IQs.
They're also closing down (again) part of Rome Air Base in Rome, NY. Our economy is bad enough. Too bad.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is sited on an island between Maine and New Hampshire. It is actually in Maine, not NH.
Safe, yes, and growing. What part of Norfolk are you asking about?
Naval Shipyard Norfolk net gain 2,036
Naval Support Activity Norfolk net gain 788
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth net loss 461
Naval Station Norfolk net gain 2,807
And, to prove my point as if on cue, there's Ted Kennedy crying like a child about some closure in Massachusetts. Priceless!
If any SD voters really made their decisions based on base closures and pork it's hard to feel too sorry for them. I do feel sorry for those who will lose their jobs, but unfortunately their loss is for the ultimate good of the country. It's not much consolation I know.
I can't support either Daschle or Thune making promises like that - that's how Harkin operates here in Iowa. The base decisions should be made for the good of the country, not on political influence.
Portsmouth NSY is a shipyard in Maine, I think the Groton "part" of that shipyard (its facilities near Groton CT) were used to stage and assemble the Trident hull "circles" for the trident construction. It was a former USCG/US sub patrol airplane (Naval Air Station) facility out near the sound.
Groton CT is the location of Naval Sub School, Navy Subase, etc, etc....
It may be a good decision, but I am saddened to see the SubBase go. Most all of us that wear Dolphins have been through New London.
You'll notice that there aren't a lot of affected bases in Northern California. That's because there's hardly anything left from the earlier base closures. Travis AFB was spared but the Concord Naval Station is on the list. However, as we discussed yesterday, that may not be a bad thing:
Base Closing OK With California City
