Man Chops Off Hands of Protester in India

NEW DELHI - A man with a sword cut off the hands of a government social worker in central India for trying to stop child marriages, officials said Wednesday. The attack on the woman highlighted the difficulty of ending the centuries-old practice in the region.

Shakuntala Verma, a supervisor with the Department of Women and Child Development in Madhya Pradesh state, was attacked Tuesday night in Bhangarh village, Superintendent of Police H. L. Borana was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India. Wednesday marked a Hindu festival in which hundreds of minors are married off.

No arrests have been made in the attack in Bhangargh, 170 west of the state capital, Bhopal.

Child marriage is illegal in India, but the ancient practice is still prevalent in some rural pockets of Madhya Pradesh. However, the number of marriages was down this year as a result of tough measures taken by police, the New Delhi Television News channel reported.

Verma had been protesting child marriages in the area, officials said.

In New Delhi, Chief Minister Babulal Gaur, the state's administrator, said it was not possible to end the practice with legal measures.

"The (law) to prevent child marriage is so ancient. But even after so many decades of the law coming into being, child marriages continue to take place. We cannot stop it forcefully. What is required is awareness," he said.

I guess we are also supposed to regard Hinduism as a "peaceful" religion.

All cultures are equal.
We must be tolerant.

No special reason; the insane have so decreed.

It's bad enough that I get calls from India every week trying to convince me to spend money every month to get minimum payment insurance on a credit card I pay in full. And don't even get me started on the times I've had to call the Dell support people.

India has 30 million Christians as well -- though they wouldn't be involved in this (the Christians are primarily urban based in India) -- so your generalisations would include these Christians as well. Generalisations suck -- you've posted an article about some weirdos in some extreme rural corner of the country and you want to condemn the entire nation because of that? Condemn 1 billion for the acts of a few?

Jesus and Ghandi both taught to condemn the sin and not the sinner. But some are eager to condemn, not just the sinner, but to unfairly spread the blame to approximately 1 billion other people.

I find it germane that the current gov't of India, a Hindu/nationalist majority, is behind the push to end this practice. Btw, child marriages were common in Europe throughout the middle ages. Along with a great many other practices I could mention. Are Christians the only ones capable of self-reform? Am I supposed to draw similar conclusions about Christianity when I read the news about the preacher who killed his wife and family because 'God told me to do it'?

If this is Hindu apologism, then I will point out that the perpetrator was also a -- HUMAN. So let's just condemn the entire human race while we are at it.

I can see your point.

I wonder how many people were shot in the head or torso in the last 5-10 hours alone in the USA or were ran through with a knife. But, of course, those instances would not make ALL 260 million Americans bad.

And you got this knowledge where? From some 40 year old episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies"? A person in Kentucky may marry at 16 with parental consent, otherwise it is 18. Here is the state law code section on that.

I don't know where you come across the idea that Americans shoot each other to try to stop weddings.

Obviously you didn't read what I wrote, my remarks about barbarity were referring to Hindu practices, they had absolutely nothing to do with Christians in India.

The Hindu religion promotes arranged and child marriage, this is a facet of Hinduism, it is not a reflection on the Indian people. Obviously there are many Hindus who want to end this practice, just as there are many Muslims who wish for peace. However, what we have here is an instance where a woman's hands were hacked off with a sword because she tried to uphold the law. This is an act of barbaric anarchy, and there is no excuse for it.

To try to put this in a better perspective. I am personally very opposed to abortion. At the same time I also am absolutely opposed to the violent bombings of abortion clinics and the murders of the abortionists. I find is insulting that I see so much talk about Gandhi here, when he clearly would have never supported violence such as this.

LOL! That's good. I get it.

That's like saying "India would've ruled the world if Britain hadn't."
