"Fifty-two years after his death, Soviet leader Josef Stalin still has a special place in the heart of many Russians."
Sounds like the lovable grandpa i always wanted .... oh wait mine didnt kill 20 million people ...boy is my face red
With all due respect to the Christian Shepherd.
Russians are just sheep looking for a shepherd. It may take 6 more decades to undo the serfdom mentality, which in itself is derived from man's tribal need for hierarchy.
sorry 'bout that, but Freedom is a state of mind.

Somebody's gotta say it...
No! 'E's pinin' for the fjords!!
I'm not certain about Russians, but I'd say there are about 35-45 million so called Americans that are.
An easy 100 in the U.S. Congress alone.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Yes, it's coming out of Putin's controlled media. However, the article also quotes "average" citizen-sheep.
Propaganda being injected from the top down and oozing from the bottom up.

"fjordski"
Early russian culture has Always had a Clansmen mentality you must remember the Russians are offshoots of Scythians which were very much acustomed to tribes and leaders and a pack mentailty more so.
Solzhenitsyn himself put it into perspective when he wrote of getting the news in 1953 that Stalin was learning that there is indeed a God....
"The loudspeakers announced it. The Asiatic dictator is dead. But where I stood young girls cried, "What will become of us now"."
Then as now Pravda was a Stalin organ so many people are not fully informed of his crimes. Nowadays too there are lots of just plain ignorant young people of the type that Jay Leno interviews in Hollywood. They can tell you all about pop stars but nothing about history.
I don't think they are pining for stalin as much as they are pining for more world stature status.
The diffence is that russia via the USSR had it in the 20th century.
France who also pines for better days, never had it in the 20th. The only thing the french ever made universal is bad manners.
Okay, this convinces me.
Russia cannot feel comfortable without a dictator.
It's just who they are.

There have been some negatives since the fall of communism and a long wait for material benefit.
Among the problems of the last 15 years has been the rise in common crime, less patriotism, a rise in the junk culture (rap, soap operas, pornography) of the West infiltrating Russia, and little effective fighting of organized crime.
Still, there is no shortage of Russians who hate Stalin.
Just give Pukin enough time please.

Based on 25 percent of "opinion"! And you live in a country that elected Bill Clinton, not once, but twice!!
Try 50 million, give or take a couple million.
Abortion is catching up steadily...
Yes, based on that 25%.
The fact that 25% would vote for Stalin is shocking beyond belief.
