Bush calls Russia a 'friend'
The Australian ^ | May 12, 2005

US President George W. Bush declared today "Russia is not an enemy, Russia is our friend", a day after returning from a sometimes tense visit over US calls for democratic reforms in the region of the former Soviet Union.

Mr Bush returned yesterday from a trip to Russia, Latvia, Georgia and the Netherlands holding out the Baltic states as an example of democracy for Russia.

"Sitting in Red Square honouring the veterans of World War II was an amazing event. I remember as a kid watching the missiles parade through Red Square - and here I sat as the president of the United States in Red Square, paying homage to people who died to defeat Nazism," Mr Bush said at the start of a meeting with members of Congress about his Europe trip.

"And I was sitting beside a friend. Russia is not an enemy, Russia is our friend," Mr Bush said.

"And it's important that we work together to achieve peace. Obviously, we have a difference of opinion on certain issues, but we don't have a difference of opinion on working together for peace."

Mr Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin stood side by side watching the pageantry in Red Square on Monday, along with other world leaders who paid tribute to Soviet war losses in defeating the Nazi Germany.

"paying homage to people who died to defeat Nazism,"

Transalation: "...even though the communist govt signed a pact with hitler trying to squirrel out of being attacked, and was attacked anyway, and thank goodness for the treacherous winter months that turned the blitzkreig into a frozenkreig, because you guys were up against a wall, and our troops hammered them in the West, disrupted the nazi oil supplies, and...." need I go on?

and our troops hammered them in the West,

You do realize that by Normandy, the Red Army was sitting on the Vestula (that's the river that runs through Warsaw Poland) and had destroyed the 6th German Army for a second time, this time 100 km inside of Romania.

"had destroyed the 6th German Army for a second time, this time 100 km inside of Romania."

Bush was correct in stating the facts about Russia's turn-about and eventual imprisonment of eastern europe. I wish he would be tougher on Putin in general. As for the Chinese govt, according to Sen. Infhofe, they are making huge inroads into oil rich nations. They control the panama canal, in a sense, and they have a robust military. Who is more of a potential, below the radar threat because we buy so much of their stuff? China.

Outside the fact that it was the Soviet Communist government, it was also 60 years ago. Stalin is dead. Krushchov is dead. Breznov is dead. They're all for the most part dead. And it was the Russian people in the Russian city streets that toppled the Soviet Union and broke up that union. Why don't you blame the Georgians, Ukrainians, etc for their roles? They all had citizens not only enforcing things: aka NKVD/KGB but they were often the decision makers: Stalin-Georgian, Beria (second in command)- Georgian, Krushchov (3rd in command)-- Ukrainian, etc.

To be perfectly honest, don't know much of about their history. However, as history has shown, post WWII, those in control were puppets of Moscow. And people that stay in control in a tyrannical environment of a few decades, get use to the privileges of being in control, and do not want to turn loose.

Bush was being a good guest. Probably hoping to get future support (i.e. abstaining UN votes) if we decide to directly confront Iran or North Korea. Hopefully it works. You can't win chess only with Pawns.

You do understand that Moscow was run, that is the Soviet Union, by a two georgians and a Ukrainian, right? This is not to say that Russians, like Molotov were not involved, but overall, Russians were a minority in the Communist party leadership upto Gorbichov. Felix, father of the Red Terror was a Pole. Lenin was half German (Volga) and his personal bodyguards were the Latvian Rifles. The father of the Gulags was Jewish (and ended up in one himself) and the father of the Gulag transportation system was equally Jewish (note: nationality not religion, all involved were atheists). Go read the linked interview with Putin. There are 4,000+ tv and radio stations in Russia, of which the government owns 1 directly and is a minority owner in 2 others.

85% of the German soldiers that died did it on the East front. Atleast 27 million Russians died, maybe as much as 42 million during the Second WW

Interview Given by Vladimir Putin to CBS anchor Mike Wallace

Believe it or not, I read it all. Interesting insight. His take on the fired newscasters was strange. I guess Arnett's personal problems never made the briefings.

In any event, behind radical islamic fundamentalism, Chinese govt is the next biggest threat.
