The Grand Old Party is back in the fight

By Tony Blankley

Thursday, May 12, 2005

It has been an awkward winter and spring for the Republican Party. But the GOP seems to be re-forming as a coherent fighting mechanism.

Winter got off to a bad start when the tidal waves killed hundreds of thousands of Asians and, more to the political point, swept away the aura of good feelings following the Republicans' triumphant November election results. That gave Democrats a chance to feel good about themselves again by beating up on "American stinginess," while Republicans had to apologize for the mere billion dollars and the Seventh Fleet rescue mission we dispatched.

After a rousing inaugural address, President Bush set Republicans to further nervous fidgeting with his State of the Union "cry havoc and let slip the dogs of Social Security reform."

Then Republicans apparently irked the public with their efforts to save the poor Schiavo woman, which in turn launched the liberal mud-ball attack on House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. For about three weeks, the House Republicans, leaderless, wandered around bumping into each other and thinking about throwing Old Tom overboard.

At the same time the Senate Republicans, without the benefit of any White House planning or leadership, were letting the Democrats use President Bush's nominee to the United Nations, John Bolton, as a human pinata.

Further enervating Republican elan was Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's tedious, slow-motion, half threat of ending judicial filibusters.

What a sorry picture -- a city full of large, ivory-tusked, bull battle elephants driven to fear and distraction, and goring each other by the braying of a pack of mangy jackasses.

But Democrats appear to have overplayed their hand. They are powerless to do much of anything in national politics of a functional ...

All of these measures are mere window dressing. Until there is LEADERSHIP and RESOLVE regarding the borders, no one will give a damn about any of it.

When you've got essentially an 800 pound gorilla sitting in the room with you - and it just ate a bottle of Viagra, while smoking some PCP - other matters tend to become less important.

Great column. I did not find this in search. Hard to believe no one else posted it.
The real problem, IMHO, is that you can't search on the name of the author and get a list sorted by date. As long as you didn't misspell the author's name you'd be pretty sure of picking up any posting, seems to me.

Maybe they are finally getting the message. Numerous FReepers have answered RNC solicitations for $$$ with empty envelopes and notes telling them they'll get no cash until they start doing what WE elected them to do.

A caller to Limbaugh yesterday said the same thing...no money until they start acting like a majority should act.

I say we should keep it up until we see definite results. This looks like a beginning.
