But it doesn't really matter, because you can substitute almost any Christian community for the Amish when it comes to matters sexual.

I cannot agree. The Episcopalians, the Modernist Catholics, and many others are no substitutions for the Amish. The closest parallel are the Hasidic Jews.

Well thanks, Sonny. That's very flattering of you, but I hafta say, I'm not a girl hahaha. Don't forget, not all whores are women. And I know exactly what you mean about that word - it gets tossed around too loosely; that and the word "ho", which I've noticed is a 'pet' name for a lot of guys to call their girlfriends. It's disgusting; No wonder they have such low self-esteem.

I grew up in the Bahamas, and my father told me that if I ever disrespected a woman, I'd probably have a shoeprint on my backside for good. And I think both my parents set a shining example of how to act in society. Therefore, if you set the same example for the kids you'll have, you've got that much less to worry about. Just make sure that you start from early on - we don't need another Maury-Povich-whaagh-I-can't-control-my-seven-year-old entertainment series lol.

The operative word was "Christian," which kind of cuts out groups like the Episcopalians. I'm still living in the stone age.

She voluntarily chose to associate with that group and accept their norms. She violated those norms. That makes it their business.

Do your own poll. Reality is that most people aren't interested in "virginity". It's just another form of ignorance, and ignorance is something which should be systematically avoided.

Actually, traditional Orthodox Jewish teaching is that if a wife is raped she must be permanently thrown out of the home.

There are a large minority of girls that I've known that wish to stay virgins until they're married.

JMKO though, I see nothing wrong if a couple has sex right before they are married just to make sure all the equipment is working right. In the case of this woman I don't see that she did anything that wrong since she got married.

What is the reasoning behind this position?

I don't know all the details, and as with most traditional Jewish law, there are no doubt many different versions/explanations/exceptions, depending on what rabbi you're asking. I think it's basically the "unclean" thing. And from a more practical standpoint, the woman could then be pregnant with another man's child and/or have a sexually transmitted disease. I assume (but don't really know) that the law would also preclude a never-married woman who had been raped, from ever marrying.

I assume (but don't really know) that the law would also preclude a never-married woman who had been raped, from ever marrying.

I don't know Orthodox traditions, but I do know that in biblical times a man who raped a single* woman, could be forced to marry her, care for her for life (he could not divorce her) and pay the bride price even if her father wouldn't let him have her. Please note, the obligation was binding on HIM, not her -- she wasn't forced to be with him.

It sounds brutal to our ears, but in a pre-industrial economy women are TOTALLY dependent on men for survival. And if a woman lost her virginity (even against her will) her chances of attracting anyone else to marry were pretty slim; and starvation or prostitution were her only "career opportunities". Hence, the rapist was saddled with an obligation of support or at least the bride price, which was a substantial sum of money, to compensate for what amounted to a massive economic loss on her part.

I suppose that, translating this priniciple into our modern culture, we should make rapists pay alimony to their victims, as if they had been married. Imagine how the rape rate might drop if perps were tormented by family court for the rest of their lives!

*Rape of an already-married or betrothed woman was a death penalty offense, since it was considered forced adultery. The woman was not punished unless she had failed in her obligation to resist; if the attack happened in a remote area where nobody could hear her scream, she was given the benefit of the doubt -- "unto the woman thou shalt do nothing".

Come now; we know all about your solitary goings-on in the quiet of the night

Whenever I get the urge, I go to sleep. I then awake without having done anything wrong. This thread is starting to distress me. If I can't find morals among my fellow conservatives where can I find them.

There are a few sinless people around, but unfortunately they're being kept busy 24 hours a day ... stoning adulteresses.

>>I agree with the school, but my libertarian side says its none of their business.<<

Wouldn't your libertarian side say they can fire her if they don't like the car she drives?

Mine would.

Its nice that you can take time out from calling other posters "idiot, putz, moron" etc. long enough to lecture them on the finer points of religion. You are truly, a man for all seasons.
