Hillary Aide Trial Begins Today

Hillary Clinton's former finance director David Rosen goes on trial today in a case that could have an impact on Clinton's political future.

Rosen, 40, is charged with three counts of making false statements to the Federal Election Commission regarding a star-studded fundraiser for Mrs. Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign. Story Continues Below

The Aug. 12, 2000 gala at a Los Angeles estate two days before the Democratic National Convention attracted an array of celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Cher and Muhammad Ali. It was arranged by Hollywood businessman Peter Paul. According to the event's organizers, it raised nearly $1 million for Hillary's campaign and the national and New York State Democratic parties.

Rosen is charged with falsely reporting that the event cost about $400,000 to stage, when it actually cost more than $1.2 million.

An FBI agent involved in the case alleged that Rosen under-reported the costs to skirt federal financing rules, allowing Mrs. Clinton to spend more money elsewhere.

Former Hollywood mogul Peter Paul's allegations spurred the four-year FBI probe into the fundraiser.

Paul claims he helped finance the party in an attempt to lure former President Bill Clinton into participating in an Internet venture he had launched with Spider-Man creator Stan Lee.

Paul pleaded guilty in March to bilking investors in his company out of $25 million.

Paul has also served as cooperating witness for the government in its case against Rosen.

Paul has filed a lawsuit against the Clintons for fraud, claiming they turned against him in the venture after learning about his record.

Another organizer of the fundraiser, Aaron Tonken, is serving a five-year prison sentence for defrauding charities out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"Mr. Rosen's defense is that Tonken and Paul concealed the expenses from him," Rosen's attorneys disclosed in a motion filed with U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz, who will preside over the trial in a Los Angeles federal courtroom.

But in court documents, prosecutors said a witness would testify that when questions about the gala were raised, Rosen said he would blame Paul and Tonken and "no one would believe their word over him."

If convicted, Rosen could face up to 15 years in prison and a $750,000 fine.

Sen. Clinton is not expected to testify at Rosen's trial. But the proceedings are sure to be closely watched for any disclosures that might offer ammunition to Republicans seeking to derail her re-election next year and her potential run for president in 2008.

Paul said Monday that he intends to call Sen. Clinton to testify in his civil suit. He called her testimony "a critical component" in uncovering the truth behind the 2000 fundraiser.

Well, this actually makes New York look better.

Hillary had trouble finding enough idiots in New York to give her money......so she had to go get it in California.

"My fellow.....uh....what state are we in now...."

Here's hoping that this will go somewhere, but it won't. Politicians have layers of fall-guys between themselves and their cash, and Hillary learned from the best.

Your statement is foolish. Observe and learn.

Will Hillary face criminal charges? No more than Teddy Kennedy ever faced criminal charges on the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. On the other hand, Hillary WILL be so damaged that she will NEVER become President, just as Teddy was.

All the particulars on this are laid out on various threads here on FR. And as more information becomes known, that will be posted here, also. You have a lot to learn, and you can be helpful in the process once you are up to speed. I hope you will join the effort, rather than merely snipe from the sidelines.

Foolish hey? Well, you are entitled to your thoughts, and I certainly am to mine.

Hillary could never make president, this will have no pro or con bearing upon that, but will she suffer from the trial? Not at all with the ones in New York who brought her to the prom, and contrary to your opinions, will have no effect at all upon that scenario.

My, my, for one who lauds himself as a First Amendment attorney pundit, (and from Yale yet?) you seem to have a derogatory attitude if one should dare have the terminity to exercise said First Amendment contrary to your beliefs from on high?

Of course I only have a seventh grade education, so what the hell do I know.

I'm not dealing in beliefs, but in observable facts on the ground. I specifically said that I did not expect the unindicted crimes of Hillary Clinton to knock her out of the Senate seat from New York.

I only said that it would affect her presidential ambitions only. I used the history of Ted Kennedy's unindicted crimes to illustrate the point. If when you said that the FEC crimes of David Rosen "would not have any effect," you really meant just the NY Senate seat, then I agree with you.

If, however, you meant that those events would have no effect on her presidential ambitions, facts and experience suggest that you are dead wrong. I offer that not as an opinion but as an observation based on reality.

And that has little to do with anyone's educational background. I debated against John Kerry's "Party" in college. His educational background is quite similar to mine. He is a fool and a horse's *ss. I try very hard to avoid both of those labels.

You are not dealing in facts, but conjecture and opinion, you may be entitled to those, but not your facts. I did not mention Hillary's prez run, you elected to jump at that conclusion, I said she would suffer no slings or arrows from the Rosen trial, and she will not. The Clintons are adept masters at slithering in and out of slime unscathed, Hillary will negotiate the crooks and turns of this little fund raising glitch with ease.

You put educatiional background front and center first by so stating yours. You may try to avoid the fool and horse's arse label by quickly applying said label to those with whom you disagree. But, IMO, you have certainly proven yourself in this case to be to be full of BS.

Yeah sure, whatever. So I guess you and the prosecutor have a minor disagreement, but hey, he is only presenting the government's case, what does he know?

Mrs. Clinton Not at Fault, Prosecutor Tells Jury (Rosen)
http://www.nytimes.com ^ | 5/12/05 | LESLIE EATON

"A federal prosecutor tried to answer at least one of those questions in his opening statement on Wednesday in Federal District Court, when he told the jury, "You will hear no evidence that Hillary Clinton was involved in any way, shape or form." "

You really do need to brush up your reading skills. I did not say that any aspect of this was a sure thing. I DID say that Hillary! would not be charged or convicted. I DID say that she could be brought down by slamming her with the facts.

Both statements remain true today. Only they are more urgent. Your choice is to whine from the sidelines, or get active and do what you can. Your choice.

Waaa, you can back track on a convoluted story line faster than a speeding bullet.
