Marilyn Quayle, GOP discussing AZ gubernatorial race
The Business Journal ^ | Mike Sunnucks

Posted on 05/10/2005 3:56:26 PM PDT by hsmomx3

Marilyn Quayle is talking to top Arizona Republicans regarding a possible run for governor next year, sources tell The Business Journal.

Mrs. Quayle -- an attorney and the wife of former vice president Dan Quayle -- has had recent meetings with Republican congressional members and top party leaders regarding a challenge to incumbent Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Top state and national Republicans and some of their business allies are heavily recruiting Quayle or Surgeon General Richard Carmona for a run against Napolitano.

Quayle and Carmona are considered the GOP's best shots at knocking off Napolitano next year. Several other top Republicans -- including Congressmen J.D. Hayworth and Rick Renzi and former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley -- have decided not to challenge Napolitano next year

The Quayles live in Paradise Valley; have been active in GOP circles and both have excellent name recognition.

Carmona, a Hispanic from Tucson, has an American dream biography and plenty of political upside, top political observers say.

He was appointed by Bush to the surgeon general post in 2002. Carmona has said he is not interested in running for elected office but sources say he is looking at those prospects, including taking on Napolitano.

Carmona's bio reads like a Hollywood movie, going from high school dropout from the Bronx to a decorated Army Green Beret in Vietnam, Tucson SWAT team member, trauma surgeon and medical school professor.

Mrs. Quayle could not be reached for comment.

Napolitano has strong approval ratings and has warm relations with the Arizona Republic, the state's largest newspaper. She has heavily courted moderates and women voters as well business and technology leaders during her first three years in office.

However, Republicans hold a 5 percentage voter registration advantage in the state and carried Arizona by 11 percentage points for George W. Bush in November. Knocking off Napolitano is the GOP's top priority for 2006.

Napolitano won the 2002 governor's race by 11,000 votes.

On a related note, Napolitano Monday vetoed a conservative-backed bill that would have made English the official state language. Conservatives supported the bill as part of their efforts on immigration issues. The governor said the state Legislature has not funded education enough so foreign speakers can learn English.

Good. I hope she runs. I always thought Marilyn was the driving force behind Dan. Not to mention the brains.

Dan Quayle had things right, 15 years ago. No doubt his wife is a sharp woman.

Best wishes, if she wages an election effort.

Surgeon General Richard Carmona is an excellent choice if he will do it.

"Napolitano has strong approval ratings and has warm relations with the Arizona Republic, the state's largest newspaper. She has heavily courted moderates and women voters as well business and technology leaders during her first three years in office."

I'd like to put this in prospective: First, she had strong approval ratings BEFORE she vetoed the English only bill and tried to dump implementing Prop 200.

Second, The Arizona Republic is locally called the Arizona Repulsive or The Arizona Repravda. They're really working to prop her up. I was once--I know you're getting tired of hearing this--a Republic carrier, but I am now thoroughly ashamed of that.

Nappy needs to go. Whichever of these two candidates advocates anti-illegal immigration should get the nod.

We have heard very little about him up here in Phx. I'd like to know where he stands on issues such as immigration, homeschooling, vouchers, etc.

And doesn't Butch have some kind of cozy relationship with the head honcho of the paper? I forget her name but I have heard Bruce Jacobs make light of it.

The AZ Republic and Channel 12--both owned by Gannett???? I stopped watching Channel 12.

Can't stand Lin Sue and Mark Curtis, and that Jineane Ford, recently married for the FIFTH time.

I heard this from my state rep. last week. I'd like to know a lot more about Mrs. Quayle before making a decision. OTOH, both my state rep. & I agree that if the polls only have Ms. Napolitano at 57% at this point, she is in trouble. She needs to be at least at 62%, since her poll number mysteriously disappear at election time. Personally, I believe that she is very vulnerable - especially on the immigration issue. But to give her a proper due, she is an extremely effective (and vicious) campaigner.

If it hadn't been for the commercials made for her by Joe Arpaio last time, she wouldn't have won. Now Joe is in trouble with the Republican princinct chairs big time, and may be just convinced to keep his big flappin yap shut this time around.

Yes he did. The left was afraid of him, and when they are afraid of someone, they resort to ridicule.

I suspect the "close the borders now" crowd would rather have another 4 years of the Brunette Hillary than allow a "criminal invader" to gain a position of influence.

Rather sad when the Republicans think that the only people who can beat a Lesbian is another woman, or a minority...

Carmona will never run, what I've heard elsewhere and credibly is that he wants to be Sherriff of Tucson or Pima or something.

Carmona also had a brief flirt with fame a few years ago when he shot a kidnapper in the process of kidnapping a woman at a busy Tucson intersection.
