Arizona Gov Shoots Down Official Language Bill

May 10, 2005 8:00 am US/Eastern PHOENIX (AP) Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a bill Monday that would have made English the states official language and required that government business be conducted in English.
Supporters said the measure was needed to encourage assimilation of immigrants, but opponents said it was an attack on illegal immigrants.
In her veto letter, Napolitano said non-English speakers should be encouraged to learn the language, but that the bill did not do anything to achieve that.
Lawmakers have yet to fund adequately school programs for English learners, she said. Under these circumstances, making English the only language for official action is contradictory at best, Napolitano wrote.

I did three and a half years in both Berlin and Augsburg...and always had enough respect for my hosts to try to speak to them in their language.
Of course, my German was so bad that most of them would chuckle at me, then switch to English. Point is, that was their choice, not mine. My wife was the same way...that's part of the reason she feels the way she does now regarding Mexicans.
On my previou post. I meant my neighbors grandson speaks fluent English. He often translates for us.
Florida has a consititutional amendment making english the state language.
Does not seem to bother the miami cubans or the Palm Beach Brazilians.
