Top al-Qaeda aide captured

May 09, 2005

IRAQ says security forces have captured a key aide to the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

A government statement today said Amar al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Abbas, was captured three days ago in Baghdad.

It said he helped plan an attack on Abu Ghraib prison in April in which up to 60 insurgents attacked a US base with suicide car bombs and rocket-propelled grenades, wounding at least 20 US troops and 12 detainees.

Zubaydi was also involved in a string of car bombings in Baghdad in April, the statement said.

We already captured an Abu Abbas in April of '03.

"Abu Abbas, a convicted Palestinian terrorist who masterminded the 1985 hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro on which a wheelchair-bound American was killed, was captured by U.S. Special Forces in the outskirts of Baghdad, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday."

Can't these rag-heads get a little creative with their nick-names...I need a new play-book.

I think Abu Abbas is Iraqi for "John Doe," but I could be wrong.

Heheh, no, they're not talking about Zarqawi, but it is true that the writer of the article phrased his first sentence -really- badly... I can easily see why you read it that way.

I thought the name was extremely familiar... I even thought of the cruise ship and wheelchair guy... but figured I must have just been misremembering that guy's name. Guess not, it must be the equivalent of John Smith for terrorists.

It means "Son of Abbas" (Abu = son). It is a nickname, not a legal name.

Close. "Abu" actually means something like "father of . . ." They often nickname themselves after the name of their first-born son (sometimes after a first born daughter).

Robin Hood and John Doe (Kevin Costner & Morgan Freeman)...

Didn't Robin Hood run around with Abu, too. (Abutu...:>)

(At least the modern Robin Hood -- I never could remember from the book any Saracen Abu roaming merry ole Enland and the haunts of Sherwood with young Robin of Locksley.)

You're right. I'm backwards. My interpreter told me this, back when Abu Abbas (the other one) was captured. Not sure why I was thinking "son of...". Perhaps I was thinking that this Abbas guy is a real son of a ...

OOOooooooooooo and wait til the media learns that we have made the guy wear panties in order to get him to talk. Then all hell will break loose and blame will be dished out to Don Rumsfeld, Dick Chaney and George Bush for mistreating this human sack of poo.
