Bodies of two girls found in Zion
May 9, 2005

BY FRANK MAIN STAFF REPORTER Advertisement

Two young girls who disappeared while riding bikes together were found dead early Monday, both stabbed multiple times and left to die off a bike path in a heavily wooded nature area of Zion, authorities said.

Laura Hobbs, 8, and Krystal Tobias, 9, were best friends and had been playing together in their nearby neighborhood Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

One of the girls was reported her missing by her parents around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, about two hours after she was expected home, Police Chief Doug Malcolm said. The parents of the other girl called shortly afterward, and authorities with rescue dogs began searching for them.

The bodies were discovered shortly after dawn the next morning by a man walking through the nature area near Beulah Park, Malcolm said. He said no weapons were found and there was no evidence of sexual assault. A girl's bicycle was found nearby.

It has been on TV all evening. Press Conference was just on FOX, and now Greta is talking about it.

Thank goodness (If anything good can be said about this horrible tragedy) it does not appear there was any sexual crime.

I am sick, sick, sick to death of all these abductions and murders of young children. There are some really evil, freaky people roaming around anymore. No child is safe-ever! What a horrible life for today's youngsters.

I think it's time to seriously consider appealing or watering down the 8th amendment. Heck, we've all but dismantled the first two.

Tends to make one want to go on a quiet, vigilante-style manhunt, the objective of which would be what I call "hemp" justice. It's a fact that necks stretch more than rope, but another test case seems long overdue.

I don't know if that's a good thing. That means whoever did this wasn't having a sexual urge. They kill for the pleasure of killing...pretty hard core.

I would like to see President Bush sign into law , right away,
such a law that makes these crimes of murder against children
a death penalty offense . Prompt execution of the penalty
without appeal. I know that's an iffy proposition , but in so many of these cases the perpetrator is often obvious by their own admission or clear evidence. Perhaps the weight of such
a swift and sure penalty would deter better than the assurance of years appeals and soft sentencing.

I'm going with the thoery that these two angels saw something evil going on. Kinda like that girl in Indiana killed by the Crankheads with a garage lab. Police should check garages in the area.

Boy do I agree with you.

It's our spineless politicians that sit around playing "Bring home the pork". Who even know what they do. Our kids are under assault and the system takes 15-20 years to off the perps. I say 6 months max for trials.

But it will be more of the same. They will appear sad and go on wasting our time and money.

I grew up in a suburb several miles south of Zion in the 1950s when it was not unusual for children that age to walk or ride bikes a mile or so into town.

There were instances of child murder at that time. The Shuessler murders and the Grimes sisters murders were in the headlines in Chicago in the mid 1950s. Still there did not seem to be the prevailing fear that we have today. Thank God I have a daughter-in-law who is "over protective" of my two grand daughters.

Such a shame for these two innocents to have to experience what they must have experienced.

My prayers go out to their families.

No, it means that the person that done this was probably someone in their early teens are younger, you did take note that one of the little girl's bike's was missing.

But what is it with parents that let a eight and nine year old girls out by them selves.

It wouldn't surprise me if the girls came across a drug deal or something that they weren't supposed to see. Such a sad, sad story.

Savage crimes upon the innocents demand a savage response from the State or it is not protecting its children. Public hanging needs to be brought back into the public debate, if our congressfolk care about anything other than bringing pork back to their districts, spending money like drunken fools, and feathering their own nests.

If you are correct, then the killers will automatically be exempted from the death penalty thanks to the Supreme Court. Since it's in Illinois, they're very unlikely to get the DP in any case.
