Man Arrested For Stomping Geese To Death Says He Felt Threatened
POSTED: 9:05 am EDT May 9, 2005
ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A man who allegedly stomped a Canada goose and its five goslings to death in Massachusetts this weekend is in court Monday on animal cruelty charges.
John Sanders says he's "heartbroken" over the incident. He tells The Boston Globe he felt threatened because the geese were acting aggressively and moving toward him, hissing and beating their wings.
Police say Sanders, an industrial engineer from Rhode Island, slipped and fell in mud after an adult goose hissed at him.
According to the police report, Sanders got up angry and went into a rampage, chasing and kicking the geese.
Believe me, geese hiss. It's their equivalent to a rattlesnakes rattle. It means "back off dude!". They can be aggressive, but as indicated above, they can be herded off, as long as the goslings are mobile. If they aren't yet, stay away.
Keep in mind that the man had six geese to kill and he had to kill them in a certain order.
At some point, mom was dead and there were only goslings left.
How threatened could he have been?
They still are used to protect farmsteads in rural America. Watchgeese are pretty effective, but I don't think they are as effective as Guinea Fowl. They are certainly prettier than the Guineas.
I thought geese honked and snakes hissed?

I will back you up on that answer. Yes, they do hiss for that reason.
And they stick out their tongues when they see you have food. It's so funny to watch.
Have I got a goose for you (stop that smirking). Too bad you live so far way, he'd be tickled to give you a demo.
Not very, I would think. He must be a little unbalanced.

What the hell for ?? He killed a food animal.
Fine him 250.00 for unsanitary poultry slaughtering and let him go.
So by following your line of "logic", an animal is equal to a person? Sounds stupid now huh? Even though your question is inane, I think it was intentional hyperbole, maybe.
Since when are goslings food?
Not much meat there.
If you classify all things as either animal, vegetable, or mineral -- then it is an animal.
The goose can be eaten. It's a freakin bird. Do I agree with what the guy did ? Hell no, but he sure as hell doesn't deserve hanging for killing a lesser creature.
Ya gotta watch out for those killer rabbits too.

Actually, I was trying to divine YOUR logic.
I'm sorry but I don't see what is so wonderful about someone killing anything just for the hell of it.
Can the goslings be eaten?
And if he smashed their heads with a hammer and lit their writhing bodies on fire with gasoline, would you still feel the same?
Not much on squab either, but they are considered a delicacy. (Knowing how ugly a baby pigeon is, I wouldn't want to eat one myself. They have to be one of the few baby animals that is not "cute".)
The goose can be eaten...

True...in fact, goose is sold in supermarkets around here usually around Christmas or Easter. I've had it once -- seemed a bit too fatty and indigestible for my taste.
I didn't say it WAS wonderful, I said it just isn't CRIMINAL.
YOU and others want to justify taking away one's GOD GIVEN freedom, just because you don't like the WAY he killed a nuisance animal. I say fine him and move on, the courts have GOT to have something better than this crap to deal with.
Sure the guy MAY be imbalanced, COULD possibly perpetrate a violent crime against a person. But if may and could were all we needed to justify arrest and imprisonment, there are minority children of unwed mothers on welfare who fit a similar statistical chance of perpetrating violent crimes. Why not go after them for chewing gum in class? Because that would be STUPID!
Hey, that's a good idea!
$250 per goose killed.
1 mother goose :-)
6 goslings
---
7 geese X $250 = $1750 fine
That sounds about right.
So then, what you're telling is, I've been just lucky, huh? Man, what a bummer.
It's a freaking bird that will take a crap on you if you scare it.
Stop getting your panties in a wad over this. It's not sentient life.
It's it respectable behavior ? Hell no, but he should not be in jail for it.
