Time to prosecute the Free Republic vandal outright. (Vanity)
today | By Lazamataz

There is an internet vandal who defaces Free Republic with very gross pictures (homosexual sex and stuff from rotton.com) as well as posting "ALL YOU F***** N*****S & JEWS SHOULD BE LYNCHED".

He pings a variety of people to his post, ensuring that the trash is still in their My Posts lists.

To me, this isn't the milder form of harassment that Eschoir engaged in so many years ago. The very worst he would do is ask if you ever committed sodomy, and he once used the screen name "Paula Jones Tw*t". This is mild.

What this sick piece of work is doing is much more egregious. I believe it crosses the line into criminal defacement and restraint of trade. Are there any Free Republic lawyers (especially prosecutors) who can address this issue, and are there any private detectives with internet savvy that will help track the identity of this person down?

Some kind of mechanism that harnesses the common intelligence of the group seems to be what is required. Decentralized systems will always be able to react faster than centrally controlled systems. The trick lies in eliminating the inappropriate responses. Either a consensus requirment, such as yours, or a trusted poster system, such as proposed by others, might be just the thing.

But whatever it is has to be fast-acting. If these things can't be eliminated within the first 60 seconds or so, the damage is already done.

You usually get a dynamic IP when you dial-up, but it is most likely from a block or range assigned to the provider.

The trouble is that if you block that range of numbers you end up blocking other legitimate users who use the same service.

most ISP's have a domain range, which generates a max number of ip# The problem is if your block the whole range, you can be blocking an entire Sevice provider and all their customers.
The email registration account setup system is by far a much better way to manage accounts.
the person abusing it looses the account and no matter if they are using a ip generator, they would have to go through the trouble on creating a new email and new account each time, which is time consuming. Eventually they give up out of frustration.

You can block those images and sites with Firefox or Mozilla as your browser (could probably be done with certain settings in Internet Explorer) or you could block those sites out completely with entries in your computer's "hosts" file. The downside to the "hosts" approach is that if the rat uses an IP address instead of a host name for loading the image you would have to rely on your browser to block the image. It's all pretty technical, but you can find sites out there that provide decent help with those kinds of settings.

I use firefox. the adblock feature would block the host I would think. Or you can use your firewall to block an ip adress if it's a static one.

Whoever this is, he needs to be tracked, and his parents/teachers/parole officer notified.

Perhaps a couple of "leg breakers" could convince him to stop. He needs to be identified.

Nice judgement call.

No it doesn't. But I was born and raised on a farm. I've delivered farm animals having to reach inside the mother animal to help bring the new animal or animals to life. So gross doesn't bother me. It does trouble me that people get their jollies on this stuff, but it's the person that gets their kicks troubles me, not the content. To each his own, but I've seen worse.

These folks get a thrill out of this. Remember the old Star Trek episode that has the alien life form that thrives on conflict. Once mortal enemies realize that thier conflict is what's feeding it, the form becomes weak and is chased away. That's what we need to do with these folks who want to invade and outrage. When we get outraged, they receive their nutrtion to come and attack another day, especially if it's organized. Ignore it and they will eventually go away. Quietly have it deleted without comment. Of course it's not in our nature to overcome our urges and go nuts about someones crassness.

While y'all work on a more comprehensive solution, individuals can do this

1. Download Firefox browser instead of Internet explorer
2. Install it
3. Go to Tools, Options, Web features
4. Either uncheck "load images" or leave it checked but also check "from originating site only"

That will stop linked photos from other sites from being loaded automatically.

Another choice in firefox is to right click on an offending picture and select "block images from" and that will block images from the linked site - someone mentioned somethingawful.com as an example.

As opposed to tracking the SOB down and eliminating his threat completely.

FR could also contact hotmail and try find out who this person is. Hotmail will not give accounts to anon-proxy server users either. they have to accept a cookie in order to create an account.
