Smoking is probably the last thing a soldier in NY would have to worry about.

"This is a public-health issue," Mr. Fuschillo said, "and we as a state should do all we can to limit access and ensure a healthy life for individuals."
Welkome to AmeriKa! This man is a fine example of the trashing of the Republican party and proof that conservatism is no longer a tenent of the party. The door to a third party is opening wider!

Too young to smoke at 18 and too old to need parental approval for abortion at 13.

Sickening.
But not surprising coming from that RINO Fuschillo.
Either you are an adult at 18, or not (that goes for booze, too, BTW). They should make up their minds and be done with it -- but if they choose to raise the age, then raise it for EVERYTHING: marriage, contracts, military service, voting, abortions...everything.
These idiots truly make me ill.

Well, at least the kids can make up for this tragic turn of events by doing some blow and some X at the clubs.

And he can't legally drink a beer anywhere in this country. He's mature enough to shed his blood, lose limbs and die for this country, but he isn't mature enough to drink a beer?

In a move opponents are labeling an invasion by the nanny state, the state Senate's Health Committee expects to take up, and probably approve, legislation this week that would raise New York's smoking age to 19. Whadda bunch of chickens. They could raise it to 21 easily enough.
While they're at it, maybe raise the age for drinking to 30.
Damn nannies.

Mr. Long said the Senate's Republican majority would probably jump on the feel-good bandwagon if the Senate leadership decided to endorse the legislation, assuming it emerges from committee.I thought NY was a totally blue state. Interesting that on the state level the Repuglies are just as into nannyism as any 'Rat could be. Time to unenroll from the Republican Party and resume Independant status.

... if they choose to raise the age, then raise it for EVERYTHING: marriage, contracts, military service, voting, abortions...everything. That position would be easier to defend. But as can be seen, defensibility is not a consideration for crafting legislation.
BTW, in Florida, a minor may not be required to obtain consent for an abortion (not from a parent, and not from a court either), and cannot be required to inform a parent. 13 year olds can go to the clinic and get an abortion with less hassle than many 18 year olds have buying a pack of smokes.

"This is a public-health issue," Mr. Fuschillo said, "and we as a state should do all we can to limit access and ensure a healthy life for individuals."And here we have the real agenda.
The imposition of the Nanny State.

Too bad nobody has had the balls to call the government on the drinking age. It is plainly illegal for the government to treat one adult differently in law than another, and yet the drinking age law stands.

It's the same in NY, Cboldt.
And we wonder why our kids and young adults are so royally screwed up. WE keep telling them they are adults when they are really children, and we keep treating them like children when they are really adults.
