Senate Coverage -- (May '05)
Thomas ^ | 5-9-05 | US Congress

Posted on 05/09/2005 5:11:00 AM PDT by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

The dems argument of these judges being "extreme" does not hold water.

Hugh Hewitt & Jon Kyl

HH: Now, Senator, I've asked everyone, Mitch McConnell, Rick Santorum, you, I'm going to ask you again. Have you got the votes when, if it has to go to a vote?

JK: Yes we do. And I remember you were talking to me about this when folks were getting really frustrated and we kind of backed it up and said first of all, we have to get the people through the committee, to the floor. We have now done that, except for one person, as you noted. And so now, it's ready. It's teed up. We've got the votes, and the only thing that really we've been waiting for is to just see if there's any hope for compromise here. It appears to me that the Democrats actually want the confrontation. Bill Frist has put out the most reasonable proposals you can imagine. They've been rejected. And if you have just a moment, I'd like to tell you what one of them is.

HH: Sure.

JK: Central to the Democrats' offers, every one of them, every single one of them, is that of the ten judges that have been filibustered, six of them have to be thrown overboard. And by that I mean not even have a vote and defeat it. They have to be withdrawn at Republicans' insistance. And it's not just that six of the ten have to be withdrawn, but three out of four specifically named judges. Three out of these four. You pick the three that you want to throw overboard. Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, Myers and Pryor. Bill Pryor, that just came out today. Bill Myers and Bill Pryor. Now you decide which one of those you're going to take, and then the other three have to be thrown over. That's the Democrats' principled argument. We're filibustering these judges because they're no good. And yet they say spin the bottle, pick one of the four, you can have him, you can't have the others. That is unprincipled. It's wrong, and it's not going to be part of any offer that I certainly have anything to do with accepting. And I just don't think our side will accept it.

HH: And Senator Kyl, it's kind of stupid, too, because it undercuts their extremism argument completely. If these judges aren't acceptable, you can't take one, two, three or four.

JK: That's right. I mean, first of all, none of these judges are extreme.

HH: Agreed.

JK: But to the extent that they've made that argument, you're exactly right. They're saying well, we'll take one extremist, but not four. So you're right. I mean, they have not based their offers here on principle at all. It's the crass, partisan politics that we've known all along lay at the base of this filibuster.

Question: I heard Boxer say she had placed a hold on Bolton's nomination coming to the floor of the Senate. Why would she do this now, and publicly? It would seem counterintuitive to what the dems are trying to do.

Will you still be posting the transcript from yesterday's senate floor consversation between Reid, Frist and Byrd?

Especially the speech by Reid---even Laura Ingraham has played his sound bite about the FBI files over and over..

I realized after I posted that request how dumb I was to ask for all of that---especially when I saw that you had posted the pertinent remarks that Reid said on the other thread related to his stupid "outing" of the FBI files...

Thanks anyway---I have already pounded my head for making that dumb request!!! LOL

the Transportation Equity Act.

I cannot resist commenting on how dumb a title for legislation I think this is. You got a beemer, I get a beemer. LOL. They've become so enamored of the word "equity" that they think it's a good idea to throw it in everywhere.

Both....IMHO, Reid is attempting to pre-empt the argument...also, he needs to clim down from the limb he went out on last week...Frist's opening comments should be telling today, because reports are that he and Reid met last night.I'll start the thread, but I have to leave shortly after one..so you can bump the list on it...thanks..BTW..how wash your weekend?. I'm still bummed about the comment onSpecter. I may add that to the discussion..

I'm not sure when Frist is going to start things.

I'm not even sure what's coming up first, Judges or Bolton.
