Senate Coverage -- (May '05)
Thomas ^ | 5-9-05 | US Congress

Posted on 05/09/2005 5:11:00 AM PDT by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

I thought it was just supposed to be a vote to get him out of committee---that would take 5 1/2 hours??? Sheesh.

The Dems are scared to death to have Bolton in the UN

They are trying to block him in committee to avoid a filibuster on the Senate Floor

They don't want to do a filibuster on the floor .. because it won't look good on them

But they will do it if they have to

I don't know, 5 1/2 hours of Biden bloviating or 5 1/2 hours of watching Macauley Culkin walk out of the courthouse in California.....hm............

Both choices could send me to a straight-jacket!

I'm sure there's going to be a live thread but I don't know how much I'll be able to recap, I got some work that has to be finished today. I'll try to jump in if anything big happens.

I was listening to Bill Bennett on the drive in and he said something REID said yesterday is cause for him to get CENSURED!

Reid started talking about confidential FBI files and said that what was in them would make anyone that reads them (in his opinion) see that he shouldn't be appointed.

Bennett said that was a big no-no.

I'll post Reid's comments when they're put up.

Someone listening to Bill Bennett on another thread said that Reid could get in a heap of trouble for talking about the FBI files.

Reid started talking about confidential FBI files....

I saw something about that on a thread, I think. Things moved pretty quickly yesterday. Was it a judicial nominee named Saad? I don't think I heard the name before. Reid has gone beyond sleezy. This is the face of dem leadership...this and Bella Pelosi (our travel violations do not rise to the level of their violation).

Here's just a small part of Byrd from yesterday.

RADIOBLOGGER

Now how can you top this?

On this site, and on talk radio and a whole lot of other great sites, we've made the case for ending the judicial filibuster as factually, historically accurate, passionate, and as fair as possible. May I enter one more audio piece of evidence?

The chief proponent to save the judicial filibuster, the filibuster that never existed before the year 2000, is Robert Byrd of West Virginia. He was once a Kleagle in the Ku Klux Klan. He once filibustered against the Civil Rights Act. He acted without any reservation four times to restrict the minority's rights to filibuster by way of a rule interpretation through the Chair four times, exactly like Frist wants to do now once. He wants unlimited debate. He wants to be able to filibuster endlessly. Keep that in mind. Then listen to this:

byrdesther [mp3]

I did nothing to this audio other than shorten the long pauses. This is what constitutes debate on the Senate floor. And people wonder why nothing gets done in the upper chamber.

If this is an example of why to save the filibuster, I rest my case for now. Esther was a Jew? He's the only guy I know that pronounces the word Jew with four syllables.
