Hagel: U.S. Decline 'Good News'
NewsMax.com ^ | May 8, 2005 | Carl Limbacher

Maverick GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel said Sunday that U.S. power and influence in the world is in decline, then added, "That's good news, I think."

Discussing whether the Iraq war had left the American military stretched too thin, Hagel told ABC's "This Week":

"The world is now so vastly different in its distribution of not only economic power ... but also in military and diplomatic power."

The Nebraska Republican then explained: "The great challenge of our time for America is our competitive position in the world and understanding this great diffusion of new power. The United States is no longer the dominant power on earth as we have been the last 50 years. That's good news, I think."

Though Hagel's comments could come back to haunt him if, as is widely rumored in Washington, he decides to seek higher office, the GOP maverick had some good news for the Bush administration.

Asked if he'd seen any evidence that would cause him to oppose U.N. ambassador nominee John Bolton since his confirmation was put on hold two weeks ago, Hagel said, "I have not seen anything that would keep me from voting for him ... from what I know now."

He did add, however, that he reserved the right to change his mind if more credible allegations about Bolton came to light.

Hagel is actually quite conservative by all the usual measures but, unfortunately, he is also something of a gadfly who -- with too-frequent opposition to our President's foreign policy -- postures for MSM atttentions ala' his chum, Senator McCain.

I agree with you but.... why does he think he's got a chance? (It's obvious he as presidential aspirations). I never though of politicians as stupid, so what does he know that we don't? - I can't imagine the conservative wing of the GOP voting for this guy, or even McCain.

Because like other people who have reached this "level" in life - they have huge egos. they are surrounded by people who praise them all day, and tell them they are great, so they believe it. they are no different then many US corporate executives.

Would someone PLEASE field a competitor against him in '06 primary? If no one will, I am going to support his Democrat opponent. I already plan to do so against Chafee.

Hagel appeals to the Pat Buchanan sorts. Anti immigration, pro tariff, anti-Iraq war, resentful of east coast elites.. He likes to parrot those words "America is a Republic, not an Empire".

But they showed in 2000 that they will vote for the most left-wing candidate, McCain, and Hagel is McCain's political son.

"Maverick GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel said Sunday that U.S. power and influence in the world is in decline, then added, "That's good news, I think.""

What an imbecile. First, it's simply not true that US power and influence is in decline. Second, no real American would welcome such a development, for it would mean more power and influence exercised by all the wacko regimes of the world.

The good thing is that these sorts of comments will come back to haunt Hagel if he really does think he can make a serious run for the presidency. Wimps like Hagel are the last thing we need in the White House.

Time to close Offutt AFB and move STRATCOM HQ to a place unconcerned about supremacy.
Great BRAC timing.

I don't understand this guy...he makes liberal Chafee look conservative, even if only because Chafees manages to keep his mouth shut more often, by comparison. Somebody vote this turd outta office. He supported that anti-Christian senator from Arizona...what was his name again??? (LOL!)

Hagel has presidential fever. It is making him crazy. He thinks that if he becomes a "moderate" Republican, he can get Republican votes AND Demoncratic votes. He doesn't realize that the Demoncrats won't give him the time of day and he is driving away Republicans. He wasn't this bad before he got presidential fever.
