U.S. Congressman Says Russia 'Won the Cold War' When It Defeated Soviet Communism
PRESS RELEASE - Washington, D.C., May 5, 2005- U.S. Rep. Christopher Cox responded to Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statement that "the demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century" by telling the Voice of America (VOA): "I would say that the Soviet Union itself was the great catastrophe for Russia, for its neighbors and for the world."
Cox, a Republican from California, made his comments in an exclusive VOA TV interview that was broadcast in several languages, including Russian. "I consider myself, as do most Americans, a friend of Russia, " he told VOA. "As a friend of Russia, I had great hopes when the largest of the captive nations, Russia itself won the Cold War. That's what happened in 1991: Russia won the Cold War and defeated Soviet Communism."
The Russian language broadcast which carried his comments was Obektiv (Focus), a daily 30-minute television news broadcast. VOA's other Russian language broadcasts include 3 hours of radio programs daily via shortwave and affiliates, and a weekly 30-minute TV show, Okno v Mir (Window on the World). Programs are also available live on the Internet at www.VOAnews.com/Russian .
The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts more than 1,000 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 100 million people. Programs are produced in 44 languages, including English.

Rep. Cox is a FOOL.
This may have been taken out of context. Cox may be saying that Russia was a winner when the Cold Ware ended. He could have been searching for a way to make a distinction between Russia and the Soviet Union.
That's the way I read it ...
His point was too subtle for you. Russia won when the Soviet Union lost, although lately it seems as if Russia is squandering the victory.
Putin sounds like someone who'd like to have the Soviet Union back and has been acting accordingly. Certainly, he's been using every opportunity to take a pound of flesh from the US either directly or by proxy. The breakup of the Soviet Union looks more and more like a PR illusion used to accumulate as much western capital and technology as possible. IMHO, Bush's trust of Putin is misplaced.
I think Chris Cox might make a good president.
Makes sense.
Cox is right.
I agree with fourscore.
Yes...exactly. Was Cox the congressman who traveled to Afghanistan during the battle between the mujhadeen and the Soviets?
Bump to that. What we have here is a "richer" communism. It is not dead, just "richer". That is Putin's dream....kapitalism
FMCDH(BITS)
A good CongressCritter but too much waffling/testing the water to be Presidential material.
Waffling, testing the waters? I'm sure your knowledge of Rep. Cox's record is better than mine(a Califorian)I'm a Missourian. My opinion of Cox is based on his work in the HoR.
But as Chris Cox demonstrates on his website, the Russians haven't even come close to purging the Communist elite from Russian power structures. When they finally finish the job, then Russia will have won the Cold War IMHO.
Isn't content on Voice of America intended for foreign consumption? I think Cox may taking the right approach. We need to counter Putin's claim that the fall of the Soviet empire was bad.... what better way than by playing up the (admittedly brave) contribution the Russian people made at the end. We know about Reagan's work and we know the Russian people were damn slow coming around but VOA is about international persuasion.
No, that was Rohrabacher.
Russia defeated itself in the Cold War; therefore, Russia won the Cold War. Makes sense to me.
Putin is into power, not ideology.
He couldn't care less if it was communism, capitalism, socialism, facism (though he would probably prefer it).
He's pretty much for anything that works, and gets him power, with minimal cost.
I doubt he's even read marx or any kind economics book.
It seems like his only gripe with free markets is that some folks get rich and then get "uppity". He's got no problems with big business, as long as they leave him alone, as soon as they sport "an opinion" and oppose him, he throws them in jail.
Its facism, Russian style.
