....snip......
"Why are they so angry?" asked Teresa Gonzalez, 57, a Mexican immigrant and naturalized citizen.
"They," according to Gonzalez, include a variety of individuals and groups:
Last month, volunteers calling themselves Minutemen descended on the Arizona border to deter illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, and a Southern California organization announced plans to do the same near San Diego this summer.
Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the work of the Minutemen, saying, "They've done a terrific job."
Earlier this week, Southern California Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, submitted a proposed initiative that would establish a state police force to enforce immigration laws.
And the U.S. Senate is poised to approve a measure that would, among other things, discourage states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Gonzalez fears these elements are combustible and could spark violence.
She also knows there's no simple answer to her question.
Paul Rosenzweig is a senior legal research fellow at the Heritage Foundation. "There's a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the current (immigration) system," he said.
Though the Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, Rosenzweig said liberal immigration advocates agree that change is needed.
"I don't think there's any consensus on what the right answer is," he said.
It seems everyone has jumped into the immigration debate, from President Bush - who has advocated a guest worker program - to California's GOP governor.
One popular theory is that Schwarzenegger's comments were a politically motivated attempt to boost his sagging poll numbers.
But activists on all sides offer a variety of reasons for recent immigration-related debates, border patrols and proposals.

Agreed that stuff gets boring. Theres enough meat on this issure to keep somebody with a brain entertained without having resorting to the childish stuff.
That is a 100% true statement,
It sounds to me like a means to an end rather than any "love of having children". More little minds to mold for the fatherland, if you will.
and it also unquestionably contains some justice.
You have a point. Payback's a bitch, eh? :)
Can you point to any posters on this thread that need that reminder? If not, then why bring it up at all? I've read many threads on the subject and I've yet to see a poster who was unable to distinguish between law-abiding, naturalized, pro-American immigrants and the illegal, criminal, anti-American variety.
In the future it would be wise to direct your accusations at individual posters who appear unable to grasp that distinction.
Sorry, assumed you were a libertarian when you said you studied with Ayn Rand. I hope and pray you have a return to perfect health.
"Congratulations, folks! Your anti-hispanic virulence has just made the GOP a permanent, whites only, minority political party."
Most of the people I have met who are against illegal immigration are Hispanics themselves. Please advise.
Fine, so send them weapons and some translated training manuals. Then shut the door and wait to see how it turns out.
At least then we'd KNOW if our 'neighbors' were either in need of help in starting new governments or in need of a serious and conventional butt kicking.
How do you explain 47 percent of Americans of Hispanic origin voted for Arizona Prop 200? Are they driving themselves out of the Republican Party?
I have a problem with Mexican's that think the Southwestern US is really a part of Mexico.
Though the Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, Rosenzweig said liberal immigration advocates agree that change is needed.
The problem is simple... Follow the laws. That's it. That's all that needs to be done. Don't give me any crap that "we need to reevaluate the immigration system." Don't try to fix it until you see that there's really a problem with it. There's nothing wrong with the laws that simple enforcement won't cure.
And these idiots who are "in charge" wonder why people are beginning more and more to simply ignore laws... It's because the people see it's OK, from the top down!

My anger is with the business lobby who discourages securing our borders. What we need to deter illegal immigration is a) to secure the borders. b) To begin fining business owners (and maybe even toss in some jail time too) who employ illegal aliens... I say, start at $10,000 per employed illegal. c) to set up a legal method for "guest workers," allowing them to be screened, and forcing the employers to bring them into our financial system.
This would leave the borders free of people just wanting to work. The only people still coming across the border illegally would be for illegal purposes to being with. And then we simply treat those people the same way that Mexico treats illegal aliens.

"That is race baiting and has nothing to do with the topic being discussed." [USMC Veteran]
Absolutely correct. However, aside from that remark and some confusion in being able to distinguish between anti-hispanic virulence and anti-illegal alien comments, I believe her(?) position is not much different than ours. But lets see.
LogicalMs, tell us, do you believe strongly in American sovereignty, verifiably secure borders and the preservation of American culture, customs, traditions and language?
Again you make that charge. What? Where? How?
Give examples, please.
I'll go first. I have read most ILLEGAL immigration threads. BTW, I capitalize ILLEGAL because most of our critics will not grant us the common courtesy of acknowledging that we criticize ILLEGAL immigration, not immigration.
Here's my example. I have seen "shoot them at the borders" comments. My guess is perhaps one in a thousand replies has something like that and I see as many "deleted by moderator" comments. The comments are not tolerated.
What are your examples? Please.
Doesn't sound as though that "naturalization" made her much of a citizen.
You're probably correct, but it doesn't say who she is referring to.
"They" who are most angry are from the ACLU and activist advocates of unlimited illegal immigration.
Oops, mea culpa it does say who "they" are.
I doubt that some people posting on this issue distinguish between "illegal Mexican immigrants" and Hispanics who were here generations before they were.
but their allegiance is with their native land.
Securing the borders of this country is racist? I think not. If a person enters this country illegally, then he/she is a criminal. I could give a horses rear what color they may be.
Well said!
