Here is Afleet Alexs' story, I knew it would be good.
"He's been kind of an underdog," says his trainer, Tim Ritchey. "He had to overcome a lot of things right from birth. And so far, he's lived up to the task."
Afleet Alex made it through his early days with the help of Lauren Silvertand, then 9 years old, the daughter of breeder John Silvertand. She gave the hungry foal milk from a Coors Light bottle. It was 12 days before a nurse mare could be found to take over the feeding.
Ritchey did not know that background when he purchased the son of Northern Afleet for $75,000 on behalf of the five-member Cash is King Stable at a sale for 2-year-olds in training in Timonium, Md., in May 2004. But he soon came to observe that there was something different about this horse's manner when compared to others he had dealt with.
"He bonded with people in a very special way, and I think that has helped him quite a bit," the trainer said. "He has a lot of trust in people, and I think he's a special horse
