SHARON - The Scouts were engrossed in a game of foosball, but it was time for a more serious type of practice. Troop leader Nabeel Khudairi goaded them from the game table and led the boys of Cub Scout Pack 111 upstairs to the prayer room of a mosque in Sharon.

The boys, ages 7 to 11, are part of the only all-Muslim Cub Scout pack on the South Shore.

Troop sponsors can be civic, cultural, corporate or faith-based. In addition to Islamic troops, there is an increasing number of Buddhist Scouts.

Nationally, chartered groups are backed by an increasing number of religious faiths, which sponsor 65 percent of all troops, Shields said.

He said the growing diversity of Scout troops reflects the nation's influx of different cultures, not necessarily a change in the Scouting philosophy.

‘‘The Boy Scouts of America has long felt strongly about a Scout doing his duty to God,'' Shields said. ‘‘But God can be defined differently, whether it's Allah or Christ.''

Only one faith group, Jehovah's Witnesses, has been blocked from joining. They refuse to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, a Scouting requirement, Shields said.

Overall, this is an excellent thing!! Glad that the boy scouts are holding strong on excluding practicing athiests, homosexuals and anti-Americans (Jehovah's Witnesses).

There are a lot of Boy Scout troops that are of only one denomination. Lots of all Catholic troops and lots of all Mormon troops. There are even all Buddhist troops.

At a recent meeting, a rainy day relegated them to indoor activities, such as ping-pong and foosball, and in between games, Khudairi imparted a few lessons on religion.

Notice he says "major prophets" I'd bet money he's talking about Christ. Muslims believe that Jesus Christ was just a prophet. Ask any muslim this "Jesus Christ is the son of _____?" The Qur'an calls Christ "the son of Mary", not "the son of God."

I was a Boy Scout and my little brother made it all the way up to the Venturers. There were a lot of Muslim boys in the Scouts when we there.

It would be very worthwhile to monitor those Muslim Boy Scout Troops. Don't kid yourself, Islam is NOT all-inclusive. It would be worthwhile to monitor all Muslim businesses and organizations in our communities--GASP!, EEK!--a hate monger! No, just one who realizes that we are at war with an ideology here and adherents of that ideology bear watching.

Actually, I think that's a good thing. It'd be their acknowledgement they know that Islam isn't the faith our founding documents were talking about. They would take the same position on Hinduism, Buddahism, Chinese traditional religion, African Traditional & Diasporic, Sikhism, Juche, Baha'i, Jainism, Shinto. . .anything but, ahem, Christianity.

There seems to be a renewed emphasis on Scouts obtaining religious awards too.
