BEIRUT, Lebanon An explosion ravaged a shopping area and set off a fire near a Christian religious radio station in the port city of Jounieh (search) north of Beirut late Friday. At least one person was killed, according to a television station and police reported two dozen injuries.
The Lebanese Broadcasting Corp. reported that one Sri Lankan laborer died in the blast.
Police said 11 wounded people, three with serious injuries were taken to the hospital, and another 12 suffered minor injuries from cuts of flying glass. They could not confirm a fatality.
Three hours after the explosion, rescuers pulled a wounded man from the rubble.
Interior Minister Hassan Sabei (search) inspected the scene but refused to speak to reporters.
Police officials estimated the bomb at 20 kilograms of explosives (44 pounds) but could not immediately tell whether it was placed in, under or next to a car on the street.
At the United Nations, Prime Minister Najib Mikati (search) said in comments aired on Lebanese TV stations that he had instructed the interior minister to take the necessary steps to deal with the situation, adding he would not tolerate security breaches. "Security is a red line," he told reporters.
