Senior Al Qaeda Leader's Notebook Seized
ABC News ^ | May 6 2005

Posted on 05/06/2005 4:07:46 PM PDT by Dog

U.S. officials are working feverishly to decipher numbers and apparent codes in a notebook retrieved from suspected al Qaeda leader Abu Faraj al-Libbi, ABC News has learned.

Al-Libbi — believed to be third in command of al Qaeda leader after Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri — was arrested by Pakistani authorities on Monday.

He is suspected of leading two failed assassination attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

Sources said officials believe al-Libbi's seized notebook contains "hot" contact information. They said officials are hopeful the notebook contains useful information because al-Libbi was stunned when he was captured.

One senior official described al-Libbi as "shocked" and enraged.

"He thought he was invincible," the source said. "He was caught with his pants down. This was not the time and place of his choosing."

Al-Libbi was trying to destroy the notebook when he was apprehended, multiple sources said.

Actually it is an old intelligence technique. First, break the codes, then set up a monitoring network of the accounts / targets. Then release to the press that you are working one the codes fully expecting the press to carry that message.

What happens then is that the target organizations does a knee jerk reaction and attempts to neutralize the targets. Perhaps this means attempting to withdraw funds or to contact someone to tell them they are no longer safe, etc.

Then the Intel org moves in a sweeps up the targets and STILL has new leads to go after! It is really quite effective and has been used against all kinds of secrete organizations including the mob to great effect.

My thoughts exactly. You put it very well.

What is the most oft-cited "fact" by those who oppose torture? That the tortured person will say ANYTHING you want him to say, just to get you to stop torturing him. Therefore, torture isn't effective and you shouldn't do it, because if you do do it, you'll only get lies out of the person being tortured.

BUT . . . NOBODY . . . absolutely nobody . . . can make up lies on the spot to explain a book full of numbers and codes that is found on him in such a way that isn't immediately obvious to his torturers. In other words, he can't get you to stop by telling you lies (because you'll know immediately that he's lying) and this particular objection to torture vanishes!

So . . . Bring out the thumbscrews!

I hope you're right. But I find it equally likely that the liberal jackals in the media want nothing to interfere with the deadly doings of Al Qaeda which they regard as a "Third World Liberation Movement."

"Remember a couple years ago - maybe longer - Pres Bush advised us that we would be hearing deliberate "misinformation"? This might be one of those times. And who better to leak this to than one of the alphabets."

They probably released this to see who starts 'moving.'

" So . . . Bring out the thumbscrews!"
Surely old fashion thumbscrews should be permitted, though I doubt, placing pink soiled panties on his head would be human treatment.

Actually, wouldn't it be sweeter if there WASN'T any book with codes? You'd get the same effect for the targets you already had under surveillance.

>deliberate "misinformation"?

Gets them out and moving.

Once asked retired CIA Field Officers what he would look for whenever he got into a new country.

he said "a backhoe!"

Why a backhoe??????

Dig up their commo wire and fiber and cut it in multiple places! Makes them get up on the air, where you can intercept and triangulate.

Same idea here.
