Principal disciplined as leaks jeopardize probe of dead pet

NORTH ANSON -- A School Administrative District 74 administrator has apologized after showing students disturbing images of a slain llama on an overhead projector.

SAD 74 Superintendent Regina P. Campbell said she has dealt with the actions of Mary F. Adley, principal at the school.

Campbell acknowledged that Adley showed students the photographs of the slain llama.

Campbell said letters of apology have been sent to parents, who were not contacted regarding the showing of the photos.

It was an inappropriate action, she said: "That's been dealt with."

Meanwhile, the investigation into the crime has been compromised because word of suspects has been spread throughout Carrabec Community School, Anson's animal-control officer said Thursday.

The school is a short distance from a residence on U.S. Route 201A where someone killed a pet llama early on April 22, or late April 21.

William "Fig" Newton, animal-control officer in Anson, said two juveniles were seen leaving the scene of the crime.

Campbell confirmed there was a tip from Newton that a seventh-grader was among Carrabec Community School students under investigation.

"There are a lot of rumors going on about who did it," she said. "I just wish they'd find the person."

That would have been much easier, according to Newton, if details of the investigation had been kept confidential at the school. Newton has been working on the case with Maine State Police Trooper Joseph Parker.

"We went to the school the morning after the incident, and said we wanted to question two students," Newton said. "By 5 that night, it was already on the street and all the kids knew about it. Everyone in school knows who the suspects are. It's hindered our investigation."

Newton said his assistant, Pamela Graf, left the llama photos at the school because the administration wanted to get an understanding on what kind of a crime investigators were dealing with. They were not for general consumption, he said.

Adley said she has apologized to both the students and their parents for showing the photos.

"I told students that, if you've seen or heard something, to tell someone," Adley said.

Adley said she convened the assembly following an anonymous tip received by state police that students were bragging about involvement in the killing.

Parent Kimberly Collins of Anson saw it differently.

"She showed photos on an overhead projector of an animal with its throat slit and its side gushing out," she said.

Newton said he and Parker have spent 100 hours on the case. "We've got one more lead," he said, "but it's not looking good."

This is Maine, for goddness sake! Haven't these kids ever field dressed a deer or moose, or at least seen it done? How could a few llama entrails be "shocking" to anyone but birkenstock-wearing vegans?
