Healey decries letting illegals pay tuition at in-state rate

Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey waged an assault yesterday against in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants as the students waited to urge lawmakers to approve the controversial bill.

``Breaking the law should not entitle you to public benefits,'' Healey told the Committee on Ways and Means. ``America is a nation of immigrants, but America is also a nation of laws.''

The bill, which has failed to pass before, would provide illegal immigrant students who have been in Massachusetts at least three years and graduated from a state high school the opportunity to attend state colleges and universities at the same cost as state residents. Bay State residents pay $1,714 for tuition at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and out-of-state residents pay $9,937.

``Massachusetts has become my home,'' said Andres, an 18-year-old native of Colombia who lives in Jamaica Plain. ``I have worked very hard. I have passed MCAS. I don't want to do anything against the country. This is where we grew up. This is where I have my memories. We just want equal treatment.''

But Healey, who said Gov. Mitt Romney would veto the bill if it reaches his desk, stressed it was unacceptable for immigrants to ignore the rules.

That's all illegals need: a bus ride home. We'll turn on the A/C and provide bottled water. Each passenger will be told: Por favor, no se vuelva.

I really like Mitt Romney and Kerry Healey! They do get it. Its time for Jorge W. and his Open Borders Lobby friends in Washington to wake up.

I'm in favor of defense dollars being diverted to construct such a security fence along the Mexican AND Canadian borders.

You're getting treatment exactly equal to all the other people whose legal residence is outside Massachusetts. Which is more than you deserve, as a criminal.
