ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - TV and film art director Sherman Loudermilk, who was once a children's show host known as "Cowboy Slim," has died, his family said. He was 92.
Loudermilk died Saturday of complications related to Alzheimer's disease at a convalescent home in Escondido. Loudermilk served as art director for such shows as "The Dating Game," "The A-Team," and "Battlestar Galactica."
But he got his first taste of fame as the host of a Western children's show in 1948 on the then fledgling KTLA-TV.
A native of Leon, Texas, Loudermilk began his work in Hollywood building sets for early KTLA shows such as "Beanie and Cecil" and an ice-skating variety show called "Frosty Frolics."
When the station manager decided to air a Western movie program for children, he chose Loudermilk because of his Texas roots.
The show lasted only a few seasons, but Loudermilk went on to become a rodeo rider.
Loudermilk had moved to California in 1934 and worked at Lockheed and as a bartender to pay for art school classes.
During World War II he served as a combat artist documenting Marine Corps action in the Pacific, and in 1965 he was recommissioned as a combat artist for the Vietnam War.
Loudermilk, who was married and divorced three times, is survived by his children Lydia and Hans Loudermilk and Amelia Komlertkul, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. His son Craig died in 1992.
May he rest in peace.
Happy trails, Slim.
RIP. I don't remember "cowboy slim." But I did watch "Beanie and Cecil" when it was a puppet act on KTLA.I think Bob Clampett was the creator.I Also remember Sherriff John. What ever happened to Sherriff John Rovic was i believe his name. And then there was Engineer Bill with Red Light, Green Light. Boy 50's TV was sure a lot more mellow thant the stuff of today.
TV in the 50s, (before we even had a TV) ,, Doing more with less.
Yup, many say it was The Golden Age of Television.
To look at what is on TV today, I'd have a hard time arguing that statement.
Still alive I believe. He won an Emmy in 1998.

I have looked a bit and so far, nothing, some shots of Beane and Cecil is about it..
I was curious to locate some of his combat artist work as well.
Sheriff John was great. he came to our school when I was in the first grade (circa 1956). Loved Beanie and Cecil puppet show too. My younger brother watched it later when it became a cartoon.
